EWJ2 transfers data to the SPC via HDMA, ie. every scanline some bytes. The timing has to be correct, and HDMA and the CPU-APU communication are among the things that are hard to emulate.

Basically I think that -because- the Snes use 16bit to render stuff (I've also heard something about 15bit) you'll loss some effects if you downgrade the engine to 8bit. The SNES uses a palette of 256 15-bit colors, and a "fixed" color that also uses 15 bits. The color combination feature...

Is this not irrelevant for SNES emulation, unless you factor in interpolated scaling algorithms? Even 555 15bpp is sufficient for nearest-neighbor scaling, or dithered bilinear if you use OpenGL or software scaling and dithering. I was more thinking of the 15 bpp vs. 16 bpp issue.
