Jack Thompson has major emotional problems. The stories circulating around about him are absolutely shocking.
I'm just waiting for the makers of The Sims to sue him for defamation.

DeJap's translation of that scene wouldn't give ToP an M rating. FF7 had more swearing and more mature themes and still rated a T. Maybe that *and* the boat scene together might be pushing it, though.

Um... it's actually pretty similar to what DeJap wrote, just a tad bit less explicit, and that might be because the translator was a professional, not a free spirit.

Heh, looks like that one's pretty much the same. ^^; <ARCHE>: Wooo-oooh! <END> <TEXT: 40> Stop it, <CLESS>-- don't touch me there...<END> <TEXT: 41> Meyer: My real objective is to sell secret information about Alvanista via an acquaintance in the Adventurers' Guild. <KLARTH>: Information? I have an alternate translation from Disnesquick's version (which never got off the ground). Here's the line from there: <KLARTH>: <MINT> is neat and calm, which is nice, but it'd be hard to get rid of <ARCHE>. I'm not sure if our own translator sanitized it, or if DeJap made it more risque.

The scene is pretty much exactly that way in the original, from what Tomato said. The question is more about sensibilities than accuracy - that kind of scene isn't as shocking in Japan as it is in America. Which is an interesting conondrum about whether the translation should have taken this into ac...

No, which is why I think Aerith is supposed to be the "real" name.
Er... and by "No" I meant "Yes", of course. X-X I.e. yes, I think that's the reason behind the name.

Perhaps Aeris sounds better, but Aerith has an actual meaning: It's Greek for "divine one".

Sure I understand why Squeenix did it, but I still would much rather that it was finished before they cracked down on it. 8-(

I believe Aerith was always "meant" to be the original name; it's not like FF7 had a flawless translation (ouch). I think there's a good chance AC will use Aerith.

Similarly, there is absolutely no difference between Schala and Sarah in Japanese. Reptites sounds about ten times cooler than "Dinomen". Changing Ozzie to Vinegor leaves an unintended crossover to Chrono Cross. Both Silvard and Marledia were just too long for the five-character naming scr...

I think Tomato talked about this at some point. Yes, Woolsey did mention that magic 50% number, but it was more like changing a sentence like this (extremely contrived example): "I saw the woman that we spoke to down in the valley." to this: "That woman was in the valley." In oth...

It's more of an otaku-elitist mindset - the kind of people who are so used to seeing subtitled anime that any actual *localization* sets them off. Of course, any professional translation wouldn't be caught dead doing that kind of thing. The only exception I've seen so far (although to be fair I'm ha...

"Demon" and "magic" are both denoted by "ma" in Japanese (one is short for "mahou" and one for "majin"). So it's entirely possible that "magic" is not a mistranslation at all.

I don't seem to have FTP access either (host not found). It seems to be either a problem with the domain name or the host settings, which I don't have control over.

I'm still not quite getting what your problem is with the page. The site has nothing to do with emulation or fixing any bugs. It just lists the current bugs and indicates what to do to recover or avoid them. If any information on it is incorrect I'd be happy to correct it, but other than that...?

Well... true, there's no way of being completely sure about these things, but the FAQs were written way before the game was translated. Ian Kelley is fluent in Japanese (his FAQs on the Japanese ToP and SO2 were very useful) and I'm pretty sure he wasn't lying when he said he was using the cart. Nei...

You're absolutely right, I haven't tested it out on a cart. I was basing my statements on ones I've heard from people (e.g. Ian Kelley) who wrote FAQs based on the cart, and extended talks with people like Tomato, who do own the cart. I've yet to hear someone tell me that a bug I said was present in...

good jokes that were translated well from the original Japanese That's an oxymoron. A joke is either good, or it's translated from Japanese. You can't have it both ways. 8p Seriously, jokes never translate from any language to any other language. If anyone wants to keep a joke he has to use a nativ...
