Made this for a different site and figured it could be useful here. Not sure where to put it so i also figured i'd stuff it in to general.
Anyway, behold:

xBR > HQXX
Re: album of unaltered vs HQx3 filter
What the hell did you use to resize these? The pixels are all different sizes, look at Link's eyes, he looks like a retard. And everything else in all the screens looks crooked and terrible.
And then you ruined it even further by vectorizing pixel art. Way to mangle the original graphics. Real CRT TV > NTSC filter > simple interpolation > every other filter > shitting all over the screen > vector (looking) filters like HQxX.

Using nearest neighbour to get 4:3 from 8:7 is not really quality scaling.

Re: album of unaltered vs HQx3 filter
Which is what will happen if you use the silly S modes under any Windows OS and/or driver set that doesn't use filtering on DirectDraw scaling.
Re: album of unaltered vs HQx3 filter
S modes are nice, but the pixel distortion in modern windows certainly is not.
Also some games can look pretty decent with those vectory smoothing filters, but mostly jsut for games with big chunky, high contrast graphics. But to look any good, it needs to have a much larger search pattern to catch different slope/curve patterns and probably a bunch of other patterns (for example, to keep stuff like dithers alone), at which point you're just incurring some pretty huge processing overhead, I'm sure.

HQ*x pulls that. Remember, reference. Pulls gradients, sharp contrasts, and checkerboard-dithering very well. Only issues are one-pixel-diagonals and >=3:1 (or <=1:3) slopes.paulguy wrote:(for example, to keep stuff like dithers alone)
xBR is a bit more slope-aware from a quick glance.

In my opinion of what it does to at least the standard 50% checkerboard dither pattern looks prett terrible.
