help with saves...

Post by h0meless »

i couldn't figure out how to load saves for a while now, but i just learned that the .zst file has to be the same name as the game file's name. hoooowever, it won't let me change the .zst's file name. for instance, i'm trying to play mario rpg, but the game name is Super Mario RPG.smc except the save i downloaded is called mariorpg1_7.zst and i don't know how to change it. anyone have any ideas?

Uh, rename mariorpg1_7.zst to Super Mario RPG.zst perhaps?

P.S. What it?

Right click on the file, then select Rename.. now you can rename the file.

Select the file. Press F2 or right click on it and select Rename.

Care to take a screenshot? A picture is worth a thousand words.

Chances are, if you don't have the ability to rename, I get the feeling you have a limited account on your comp.

Sometimes, I think you need to explain yourself better (or learn to properly use the computer) or you are not going to get the correct answers.

Edit: Imageshack makes the whole screenshot process rather easy if you copy+paste like the next person.

That's not how you use savestates. In order to use a savestate, you need to rename the file...

For example, if your game's filename is "SMRPG.smc" (w/o the quotes, obviously), then you need to rename the savestate "SMRPG.zst".

To load the savestate, it is recommended to define a save directory and put the savestate file there, or just put it in the same folder the game is in. Then load up ZSNES, and then hit F4. That should load the savestate.

right, sorry, i'm not really familiar with how forums work =/

so the save and the game have identical names now, minus the extensions (.zst for the save and .smc for the game...) and are in the same folder, however when i try to load the save with f4, it says " unable to load state 0". i realize this is probably a pain and for that i'm sorry.

It also helps to configure Windows (I guess that's the OS) to show file extensions.

Alternatively, Total Commander or xplorer2.

You need screenshots.

You are better off with saves (files with the SRM extension)... all you have to do then is just load the game normally while having the file in the same folder as the game (with the file renaming done as well) so it will be automatically loaded by ZSNES. That is generally more reliable than using savestates.

Looks like to me judging from the photos he's posted (linked for easy access):
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4128 ... derxe7.jpg

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4076/s ... dertd3.jpg

He's got the ROM's inside compressed folders, and the SRM data is in the same directory. However, his save states are located in a subfolder called mariorpg1_7, which unless he's changed the paths, would explain why he can't load the save states correct?

Furthermore, does Vista allow ZSNES to write to C:\Roms\..., or is that only C:\Program Files\...?

EDIT: Also, the save states file extension currently looks like it's .ZS7 instead of .ZST.

ZST is save slot 1, ZS2 is save slot 2, ZS3 is save slot 3 etc.

wouldn't be a problem unless the directory had been manually set as read-only.
