Text Overwrites Iteself

Post by maxxus »

I own Final Fantasy Chronicles and I thought I would give the rom dump of the original Japanese version on the disk a spin. The rom is named rom.bin and is on the root directory of the CD. The text on the Battle Mode selection and Character Naming screens is okay, but when Chrono's mom starts speaking the text will wrap back to the beginning but not drop down a line. I tried the English version of the rom and it works fine. Attached are the screen shots.

A. That's Chrono Trigger.

B. Verify your ROMs with NSRT.

The image included on the CT PSX CD is supposed to have the text overflow. If you don't want it to, get yourself the original Japanese version.

Oh, and yes, the image is in NSRT.

Cool. Is there a reason the text is supposed to overflow?

The quasi emulator used by the PSX version plays the original game along side the PSX version of it, and pulls text from that first line to either display, or use as a translation lookup in a table to know what to display.

Apparently, they felt removing the code to go to the next line in the image made it easier for the PSX quasi emulator to process, and rip the text. The PSX version while looks good, code wise, is a huge hack.

Interesting. And here I thought they had actually ported the code to the PSX. What a bunch of cheating bastards.
