ZSNES v.1.51 - Earthbound arbitrary black screen?

 ZSNES v.1.51 - Earthbound arbitrary black screen?
I got a black screen when moving between areas (specifically between Peaceful Rest Valley and the small cave/passage leading into where you meet Paula for the first time). I've never gotten a black screen playing this game before and it doesn't reoccur when I travel between those two areas again, so I just want to know how to fix this in case it happens again and screws me over in the future. Just to note, I can do absolutely nothing on the black screen.

edit edit: It happened again, but this time on the transition into a battle (still an eternal black screen). It was some time later than the first time, so I guess it's pretty rare. Not too much of a problem, I hope.

The same thing literally just happened to me. I hadn't saved in a while and I hit save state and then I exited. Do you happen to know if when I restart it from that point if it will crank right back up or I'll still have the black screen?

Savestates keep the state (derp). Glitches and freezes are part of the state.
