upon launch full black screen and freeze ubuntu 12.04

Hello,
when I first installed the zsnes seemed to work fine, than I tried to change the reselution and acidently set the wrong one. Now zsenes causes my whole screen to go black and my computer to freeze. All I can do now is wiggle my mouse and the cursor works, but can not get out of the screen. Once this happens I must restart the computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times through synaptic, tried to change the res by editing the zsnes .cfg file to the correct resolution (not sure if I did it right tho) Please help me to get this program to work agin.

close zsnes and then delete the config file.

Or just delete the line in the config file controlling the video mode.
