Emulator running too slow

Post by goku2000u »

Hello,

I have been using ZSNES 1.5.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium on my Compaq Presario CQ61 with AMD Sempron m120 processor/graphics.

It used to run so well and very smooth like the actual system. About a month ago, I have upgraded to Windows 8 Professional and ever since then, the emulator has been running extremely slow. I can't figure out how to get it back to the way it was, I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the drivers, but not too sure. I am using the new resolution on the emulator 1366x768, vsync disabled and 4:3 ratio disabled so I can get it stretched. That works.

It does run well in windowed mode, but when I enter in fullscreen, the speed decreases and it's sort of hard to access some options because of how slow it is. Assistance on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is a guess, but windows 8 drivers probably don't hw-accelerate directdraw7 features anymore.

stuff that emulates directdraw might work for zsnes.
assuming you're using same resolution as the deskop for the full screen purposes in zsnesw, you might want try DXGL, ymmv though.

I don't know. I'm starting to think that it's too soon for Windows 8 to have the right drivers for my laptop. Because now, even my FCEultra, Mugen, GTA San Andreas, and RE4 for my PC runs pretty slow... I wouldn't wanna have to downgrade my OS. I'd rather wait...

But thanks for the response anyway, you guys. I appreciate it.

The bad news is that, depending on the specific hardware you have, you may NEVER have good Windows 8 drivers. '09 is long enough ago that there's a good chance support has ended on several components.

Also, the Sempron line does not, and never has, include integrated graphics processing. You need to figure out at least who made your graphics chip before you can determine if it HAS Win8 drivers.

DirectInput represents all bits, not just powers of 2 in an axis.

Hello,

I don't know what happened yesterday, but I changed the ZSNES resolution back to 1366x768 with filters, I was able to fix some things around, all I had to do was disable the tripple buffering and the vsync and the game was running smooth. I guess upgrading to Windows 8 might've set the emulator's settings to default.

Thanks for the replies anyways, though, you guys. Much appreciated. Cheers! :)

I just found out how to get around the slow performance issue:

Change the resolution (the emulator will be slow)
Alternate to Windows' desktop or another program
Alternate back to the emulator, it will be running smooth
Go figure

What the.. wow this actually works! :D (running on Windows 8.1)
This means the emulator (fullscreen) actually works on win 8, but why shouldn't the fullscreen mode work on the first startup without this "trick"? Oh well, time to play. :)
