Temporarily assign the same key to both the L and R buttons. This question is covered by the FAQ, which you should have received with the emulator.

It's your keyboard's fault.

Keyboards were not designed for video games. They were designed for text input. Most, if not all, of them will have great difficulty passing multiple keys due to the way they are designed.

Modifier keys are immune to this, as they are explicitly designed to be pressed alongside the rest of the keys. So shift, ctrl, alt, and win are immune to blocking.
But the real solution is to buy a gamepad.

Slightly off-topic, but for a good time, press both shift keys at the same time and type. The results with my wonderful Logitech Ultra-flat Keyboard:

HE QUIC BROWN OX UMP OVER HE Z OG

Hey, I know, let's start a topic where people post the results of their own keyboards. It seems popular every now and then on 4chan.

same result as kode54. I also noticed it won't let me press any combination of two arrow keys while both lshift and lctrl are pressed. Is it really that expensive to make a keyboard that works for these things?

It's "jumps". Otherwise, you're not using the S key.
