Zsnes crashing

My cousin and I are trying to play BattleToads and Double Dragons over netplay. We followed all of the steps in the readme, and I was the client to his server. He clicks load bt.smc (what we named the file) and it says Loading bt.smc in the chat screen then both our zsneses crash. Both files are identical as I downloaded mine first then sent it to him. Any suggestions?

What version of ZSNES are y'all using?

Oops sorry to mention that, we tried with 1.42 and 1.36, we both have Windows XP home edition

Please scan your ROM with NSRT.

Quick tutorial: Stick NSRT and the ROM in the same folder, go to a command prompt, change to that folder, then type nsrt romname.ext.
