.ips CREATION (not patching)

Post by Avelon »

I've been around the 'net at least twice and, whether it's a matter of Google hating me or the content really not being there, I can't find anything on .ips creation. Patching, yes. Put the .ips in the same directory as the ROM. Rename. Or use SNESTool to apply it permanently. But that doesn't help if you want to make a gimmick ROM, or retranslate a ROM.

So, what I'm asking is just this: Can anyone please link me to information about ROM hacking, and/or explain it to me? Even a simple link to tools would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
kthxbie!

translating games isn't as simple as taking five seconds and making an .ips file. what you do is take countless time and energy editing a rom file, then using a program such as lunar ips to take the original file and your hacked rom, and it will record all the changes into a patch file.

as for translatng roms, I'm not even gonna touch on that subject, because it isn't easy.

Thank you for the link. I don't read Hiragana/Katakana, so I can't translate a game from Japanese...and most games that were in Spanish or German originally were translated to English anyway.

If I still haven't found/been linked to reference material for the actual hacking tomorrow, I'll e-mail FuSoYa. =)
kthxbie!

You might want to start at http://www.romhacking.com
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Another suggestion: It's always best to start with something simple to get to know the innards of a ROM, like an NES ROM.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

D'oh. I thought the site was abandoned. It gave me a 'Cannot find server' error when I find it via Google. Gracias.

Come to think of it, they WOULD be simplified versions of SNES ROMs, wouldn't they? I always assumed (having never seen the innards of an NES ROM) that it was Binary, whereas SNES was Hex. (I know, I know)

Just for that, you're going to play the first ROM I gimmick. No arguments.

for beginners I'd recommend graphic hacking. I like the program tile layer pro, it can eidt *uncompressed* graphics for many systems. many games to save space compress their graphics, and they use different compressions for each game, so you'd have to go in and look at the asm code to figure it out. but use that program and make some graphic changes, then look up nes/snes palettes and try to change some colors of the graphics with a hex editor.

Hey I'm all for it if you can actually do it :) It's just that I have seen a ton of people come by here who wanted to learn rom hacking but had no idea of the magnitude of what they are up against. Rarely does anything ever come from it, but even so I wish you luck.

what the hell? an ips file is like a chat log. you could have a conversation between me and god, and record it in a log. however that log cannot recreate the genius that I converse with god.
