Is This Seriously in the Final Version of ToP!?!

Post by Peaches »

Is that whole suggestive 'favour' that Arche offers, and the stuff that Klarth says about 'taking one under the sheets' really necessary?!?. I've looked things up about it, and someone else said (on another forum) that the characters said something way less racey. I'm just wondering as to why someone would make super-deformed characters in a childs video game say something so sleazy. Kids play this game, and I find that whole little joke put in there really takes away from the whole game completely. To put it bluntly: it's immature, and downright gross. Is that translation really what they said in the game or what?

We've only seen this question about a million times now, and the answer is simply that the script was open to interpretation at that point. Purists can argue one way or the other, but that's the way it is.

Cope with it or don't play it, really quite simple. Though if you have a severe problem with a little sexually-oriented talk during a game that deals with murder, cheating, revenge, and those sort of unpleasantries, you REALLY need to reinterpret your values.

And, buddy, if you think kids are going to find any of this shit a shock, I suggest you go to any middle school or even elementary school these days--kids just ain't what they used to be when it comes to sex, pure and simple.

phonymike: well the same amount of raw metals used in a car costs a fraction of the price of a new car idiot. I'm gonna take away your posting privileges and replace them with my balls on your chin.

Personally, had I the skill and determination of the wonderful folks at DeJap to spend several thousand collective hours hacking Tales of Phantasia, I would have replaced the entire script with dialogue from several 70s-era porn and "blacksploitation" (I'm talkin' bout Shaft!) films.

Be grateful that such a project was taken on by a gang of dudes that only went so far as adding that little bit of spicy innuendo, instead of me or Satan (or you, who I imagine would replace any and all plot-centric conflicts in the game with references to rainbows and unicorns).

I just remembered that similar conversation we had here a while ago.

Yeah, if you don't like the adult themes in the game (gross or sexist and whatnot), don't play the game.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

I would never consider this a "childs game". Just because it's a game doesn't necessarily mean it's for children. In fact, since I have two nephews that live one apartment away from me, I keep this and other similiar games on a cd and out of their reach.

There's nothing 'adult' about the sexual innuendos. It's really quite immature, and all I was asking is 'why' it was needed. Why? It's just really beyond me that anyone would be interested in making sexual jokes for pixelly super-deformed characters in a video game. I just can't understand the appeal.
I know that today most kids are jaded at an early age, and instead of trying to justify your actions with the 'that's the way the world is today, get over it' attitude, why not instead try to change it and make it better? That really may be a new concept to you, but I suggest you think about that one for awhile.
I'm sorry that you think me all a pansy, but if you can't understand my point of view on how absolutely infantile that sophmoric dialogue is (which frankly, in my opinion, puts your sexuality into question for putting it there in the first place), then I think you seriously all need to think more with that organ in your skull, rather than the one under your mumu.

I don't understand your reply to this. Do you mean to say that you've watched so much anime that you've become perverted, or is it just the fact that you find super-deformed characters sexually appealing?

No, just that if you have seen anime (Or any other animated thing from Japan) They tend to do Cartoony Sprites even if they represent 18+ characters. This is noted in alot (If not all) Snes Rpgs.

Also, Japan is a bit more liberal of what can be considered "Adult content" and what is fine for their kids to watch. Blame the developers, not the guys that just try to make a translation as faithfull as they can.
Edit: Remember that in Japan, "Adults" have been playing videogames since the Nes days.

I never thought that someone was going to complain about a faithfull translation, it's true, I don't know Japanese, but I respect the translators Job (They are not being paid, they do it because the want to, etc.). No one is pointing a gun at your head just so you have to play the game with the patch, if you are offended by the content (Which IMHO is a bit immature, but that's just me) Then just don't play, but don't come here complaining about it and stating that it's raping your virgin eyes. :?

... Also, Videogames are not just for Kids...

Talking down to people is an excellent way to convince them that they're wrong and you're right.

On point, if anyone should be taking responsibility for what games/movies/books children are exposed to, it'd be the parents. It's not a game designer's job to shield questionable material from minors when the target audience for that game are adults. This I feel also applies to amateur fan translators and programmers.

Also, keep in mind that you're not the one who translated ToP. These guys put a lot of effort into the game for no pay because they wanted to and could have easily not released it at all. If you want a "clean" translation of a nearly 10 year-old game, feel free to hack it yourself.

I don't mean to butt into this topic but this is what they show on tv in japan and it's only anime. Hell kids watch this stuff if you didn't realize (Probably teenagers more likely though). Check out the kiss in Kannadzuki no Miko at the bottom. http://www.jascii.net/newanime/season.php
