Looks like Kotaku just posted this bit of news. Which is to say that April 1st, there will be an update for fat PS3s that does nothing but disable Linux support. Again, who really cares? Did people actually buy PS3s just to install Linux on them?

Yeah it wasn't old. It was rumored before, but this is the first confirmation from Sony. I can see some people will be pissed, but I never intended to use it on my PS3 anyway.

I intended to buy one for the PS2 BC and Linux support, but since they've both been gutted, Sony has saved me a good amount of money. I'll just wait until they're $99 like the PS2 is now. If that's never, so much the better.

imo they should just sell a sell a PS2 emulator as a download... It'd convince more people to go slim if thats major factor for some...

I remember some dood saying they had saved major cash building a ps3 cluster instead of normal-er computers to cloudcompute shit with linux installed on them and gloated he'd never ever buy a single game for the system(s).

That was close to the beginning, too, when the loss per unit was bigger.

Some guy at sony probably compared quickly the amount of games bought by those who installed linux and the others.

linux is 'unsecure', sony implying
how exactly firmware handshake was done?
can it be spoofed too?

I bet the amount of people who used Linux on the PS3 amounted to about 3000-5000. Really, I'm betting this is more about them trying to save costs on having to maintain support.

Saw this the other day when updating my fw.

What badinsults said. Linux is crap on the PS3 anyway (and this is from personal experience with Ubuntu and Yellow Dog on that platform), at least for desktop usage. Most uses of it on PS3 are/were in research labs, where clusters of cheap cell-based super computers could be setup with ease.

Want to keep Linux on your PS3? Don't update your firmware, dummy.
I happily reclaimed my 10GB of wasted space after pulling my hair out numerous times trying to find how reviewers could have justified touting the PS3 as an awesome Linux platform.

Probably would be better if it ran on bare metal and had good drivers, but they fucked that up.
Maybe these people were born without that part of their brain that lets you try different things to see if they work better. --Retsupurae

Sony's been giving its own fans the finger for years now.
Seriously, I was a huge Sony fan back in the day and even I'm tired of their bullshit.

It's quite funny that PCSX2 is a better emu than the one Sony implemented earlier..
I suppose having the original 60GB PS3 with full hw PS2 BC, SACD, Linux support, etc is quite a novelty now at this point.
Did people actually buy PS3s just to install Linux on them?
Hell yes. Cheap super-computing ftw. Just as people bought them for cheap blu-ray players, that were actually better than standalone players.
It hurt Sony, because they sell the console for less than it costs to make; if people don't buy lots of games, Sony loses money because that's where the profits are made, the games.

I've debated throwin linux on my 60g (equipped with a 320g) but I always waited on it... Now I dunno if it's just easier to sell it off to someone that would get more use out of it and buy a slim and say screw it to B/C and all that

Prolly $400 with receipt for 1yr warrenty, dust filters, intercooler ex, and a bluetooth in-ear headset

I wouldn't suggest even using the dust filters while the system in on, but they pop apart so you could do the panty hose trick with em and leave em on... the intercooler is really loud and I've considered just using sleeve fans in it... but the systems run solid compared to the other ones I had, and I havnt really used it much since I got it...

I too intended to buy one due to the linux support (because it allowed you to run your own code on the PPE/SPEs) but pfft...whatever.
