Starfox / SFX question

Post by smkdan »

Just a small question about SFX / starfox.

From what I can gather Starfox runs 'too fast' in ZSNES (I wouldn't know if its true or not). Does this mean the frame rate is WORSE on a real snes? It chuggs along at about 15fps and the really noticeable delay between your controller input and the action on screen is obvious even in this 'too fast' mode (And its painfully obvious Stunt race with the steering). Does it mean that on a real snes you'll get something like sub-10fps and horrific respose times with your input? :? Or it may be the pacing of the game alone and the SFX's 'frame rate' may be untouched but I'm not sure.

The only SFX game I've played on my SNES was Yoshi's Island but I no longer have it and I barely remember playing it. I'm just curious of what Starfox, and probably some other SFX games, were like on a real SNES.

The newer WIPs run the game fine. If I remember (not sure offhand), the official 1.42 runs it too fast.

Yes, even on a real SNES it runs painfully slow by todays standards.

I remember how great it was when I first got the game, but playing it on my real SNES nowadays really shows its age. You just have to get used to that bit of lag/control sluggishness. When the action gets real intense on screen you can really notice the FPS drop, to near single digit levels.

I still love StarFox, one of my all time Snes favourites.

It's still too fast in the latest WIP 03/19.

Yeah it is. But when I first played it I felt the same way but after you keep playing it, it feels normal. Then you'll think it feels to slow if you play it on an older zsnes.

Hmm, seems we have a bug regression in the new WIPs. I have an older WIP(November 9, 2005) that fixed the too fast bug, making Starfox run at the correct speed.

There has been many changes since January 31. So expect things to not work correctly.

Yes, please don't throw around the phrase "regression" in regards to the WIPs.

I'm under the impression that processor timing is fairly sensitive, especially for special-chip games (of which StarFox is one). Also, "hackish" code (which may have since been removed) may have been the reason for things running better in previous versions.

StarFox is a popular enough game that I imagine the developers would strive to make it "run well" before an official release.

I'm not sure why it still isn't there... 11/9/05 specifically was there to fix the Star Fox graphics problems (and probably speed)

I tried the suggested WIP and got a look of the 'real' Starfox. To be honest I dont really find to be all that playable. The sub-10 fps is evident during virtually all the game and it tanks REALLY bad in some sections (controller issues more evident here too).

To compare, I like the 'faster' Starfox better because of its bearable framerate and the fast gameplay (Controller input is not that bad). It looks like what Starfox should've been on the real SNES. Perhaps if they got around that wierd clock speed issue it might've been a much more playable game.

Thats just my opinion though...

I find it too fast (but only a little) coz I'm used to the 'normal' speed on my PAL Snes.

It will be fixed before release I an assure you of that. We are working towards a release type right now. We want to get the old emulation core working as well as possible then release. That's when the new overhauled core with much improved pretty much everything comes in, but that will require lots of testing which is why we want to wait after a release to make big changes to the core.

I know, I'm bumping an older thread, but I just had to say this... The "faster" Starfox breaks the introduction. You don't get the hear Dan Owsen's full intro. That said, I've never heard the full intro on ANY version of ZSNES or SNES9x.

This is the full intro:

Awesome. It's been a while since I tried it.

You always heard that. In the versions with bad timing, the later part was cut off by the blast off sound effects and then the scene changed. I noted this the first time ZSNES added SuperFX support (and added C code to the source ;)).
