Only possible with games that support in-game saves. Copying the *.srm file (e.g. "Super Mario World (U).srm" if your ROM file is "Super Mario World (U).zip") should be enough.

If you're using the same emulator you can also use the ZSNES savestates (*.zs?).

from an ammeters look at snes9x's saves they seem to come in this format

game.smc-000000-000000.sv
with the zeros being a set of hash numbers

Probably because it's not a save state.

Read the documentation.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Also, save states do not transfer over to other emulators(or, really, even different versions of the same emulator), usually.

You seem to be confused.

There are TWO types of saves. TWO.

The first is a save state. This one is used instantly, and can be used whenever. These are the ones that do not transfer.

The second is basically the game's own save function. The emulator saves it to a .srm file, and these are compatible with any emulator. You can use .srm files from ZSNES on snes9x, and vice versa. These DO transfer.

Load the savestate, let the game save your progress, exit the emulator, copy the SRM file.
