Are saves compatible with other Emulators?

Post by gc391 »

Having trouble with SMRPG, locking up after I acquire Johnny's star piece. It was recommended I try a diff emulator but I don't want to start all over, so as the title says, wondering if zsnes saves would work on say SNES9?

Or if you have another solution to this problem I'll gladly listen.

Battery save (.srm) files are generally cross-compatible. Make a backup copy before you load it in another emulator, though, just in case.

It's not a bad idea to back up battery saves every once in a while, anyway - an errant "load state" can revert a battery save to a much earlier point instantly.

Unless you configure them not to.

It does make some games not work right (hilariously so) with states, but the great majority (and any game without sram to begin with) do not suffer from that.

Appreciate the answers, but I know don't ZSNES that well. How do I creat a battery save? The saves I have are ZS1. How do I get it to be srm?

Save using the game's save-game function.

Even if you don't use it, they are automatically created (empty, but there). If there is no .SRM file in your save directory, there is no in-game save feature.

Or the other way. THG for instance, if you destroy a container and get an item, the item gets stored in wram while the container is flagged empty in sram. Reload the state, you lose the item and the container is empty.

lawl

Similarly, the scenario advance counter is directly written to sram, so every state you make in the first town and load relaunches the game beginning events.
