He misspelled it intentionally.
To answer his question, the NES and the SNES are two entirely different systems. They do share some similarities, but the NES was such a mess of game/region-specific hardware that it really requires it's own emulator to effectively manage it all. It would be a horrific mess to attempt mixing an NES emulator with an SNES emulator.

I don't even think the emulation scene has been around for 12 years. That dates us back to 1992.. I don't recall any CONSOLE emulators being around back then.. although I didn't get into emulation until 1996 so my knowledge of what came before me is limited.
However given the information available now(2004), you probably could code an emulator that does all systems pre current generation consoles in 12 years time. Although.. there really isn't much point at this time to do something like that.
Tieing all the current emulators together via a multi-console fontend is probably the best bet.
