I think I used DOS IPX netplay like twice in the computer labs in college, right before the release of the windows port. It can go.
Adding direct-dial netplay in the windows port might make it easier for the netplay and router-inept though, and could actually be faster by bypassing much of the IP overhead and internet lag, especially for dialup users.
