No Sound with DOS 7.1 and ZSnes 1.42

Post by Kernel »

First of all, thank you for this great emulator!

I'm trying to use ZSnes 1.42 (Jan 19 2005) with dos 7.1 but I have some problems with sound... (same result with dos 7.0)

Test configurations:
PC1:
ASROCK K7VT6 (VIA KT600 + VT8237) with AC97 integrated sound disabled
AthlonXP 2600+ (333MHz)
256Mb RAM DDR333
40Gb Maxtor HD
Riva TNT2 16Mb
Sound Blaster 128 PCI

PC2:
HP Brio BA410
P3 733
HD10Gb
RAM 256 PC133
Video card on board
Sound Blaster 128 PCI

CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
device=c:\DOS\himem.sys
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS NOVCPI
files=50
DOS=HIGH,UMB

AUTOEXEC.BAT:
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6
SET SBPCI=C:\DOSDRV
C:\DOSDRV\SBLOAD
C:\DOSDRV\SBINIT
path=c:\DOS
doskey
prompt $d$_$t$_$p$g
SMARTDRV /x

Those configurations works perfectly with Mame, Mess, Kgen98 and Genecyst.

Zsnes runs ok, but there's no sound at all (I've tryed many roms like final fight 2/3, Demon's Crest, Act Raiser 2, ecc...).

In the gui configuration window I have checked "Enable sound", "Stereo sound" and "44100Hz".
I've tryed also old versions of zsnes with the same result...

Can anyone help me with this problem? Am I missing something?

Is there any particular reason you're using DOS isntead of, say, a stripped-down version of Windows XP?

I'm using a direct connection with an old used arcade monitor (more or less like a NTSC TV).
With ArcadeOS (DOS) you can get 15KHz output directly from you VGA and with an arcade monitor connected, you can have a real old times video configuration!
But this problem sussists also with a normal VGA monitor... :cry:

I never managed to get sound on any DOS version of ZSNES. Ever.

And I don't believe I was alone in that.

Ok. If you read my first post you can see that I've the SB128PCI configured and working with sound on all DOS emulators i've listed ( Mame, Mess, Kgen98 and Genecyst).

You using WinME?

You will probably need to force 8-bit sound in the GUI, that should help significantly... You will not be able to get 16-bit sound in ZSNES DOS unless you get an SB Live! or Audigy...

I did back then, decades* ago, with my 486, my sound blaster 16, and playing a link to the past at 10fps...

Thinking about it, maybe I didn't :) Not sure.

I'm using DOS in "pure mode" (7.x version comes with Windows98).

I've tried to force 8 bit, but it doesn't seems to have any effect... (my SB128PCI supports 16 bit sound).

I've tryed also my friend's sound blaster live! 1024 but it doesn't work anyway... :cry:

A really dumb question on my part, but do you have on-board sound on this thing? I see that you have added the SB128, but if you have onboard sound, is it possible that sound might be directed there instead?

/Remembers an old article where something like this happens, so one would run a jumper cable from their onboard sound to the line in on their add in sound card.

Prolly a dumb idea, but didnt see it mentioned.

Thank you for your answer.
On the PC1 there's the on-board AC97 sound (this version doesn't work on dos) but I have disabled it in the BIOS (remember that SB128PCI works pretty well with other DOS emus).
The PC2 doesn't have any sound on-board.

I also heard something about the newer DOS needing sound drivers or emulator or something of that nature,try going there http://www.defacto2.net/help-dos.cfm .read that and get an application called VDM sound.
And oh yeah there's only one kernel and he fries your chicken real good.

VDMSound is used to emulate old SoundBlaster/other cards for those that don't have one.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

How can it emulate a soundcard if you don't have 1 installed?

Actually, VDMSound is used to emulate a sound card for DOS applications running under Win2K and XP. VDM stands for Virtual DOS Machine.
