The best way to play any DOS game is with an ISA sound card. Preferably a Sound Blaster 16 or similiar such as Awe64. I've always gotten them to work in DOS with the simple SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T6 command. Even some old ESS cards being Sound Blaster compatible work perfect as well. PCI sound cards are a little bit different though.. Usually need drivers.

I must try that out. I have a shitty ESS intefrated soundcard. Could never get sound to work in dos.
Or a mouse either.

I have tried the DOS version recently, and I got no sound either, but all I had to do was click the "Enable sound" in the Options >Sound window, could it be as simple as that perhaps?

Nah, it's more obvious than that.

How can we emulate an SNES if you don't have one installed?

Yay, my old SoundBlaster 16 VibraX still works like a charm.

Ok, this is the best way, but nowadays I can't find motherboards with ISA slots...(the fastest CPU supported by an ISA moytherboard is an AMD 1300MHz thunderbird and unfortunately I can't find it anymore). And I don't understand why this is the only emulator/program that have those issues...

My point is that if you have a computer new enough that it doesn't have any ISA slots... Then I see no reason to use the Zsnes DOS over the Windows version. However you have special requirements.. your monitor and whatnot so I understand that.

And no, I don't understand why it doesn't work either. I see nothing wrong with your setup.

I understand your doubts.
The reason is that I use ZSNES on an old arcade cabinet (15KHz NTSC low resoulution arcade monitor), and I have to use the ArcadeOS DOS program http://www.arcadeos.com to "drive" ZSNES at 15KHz (instead of 31KHz VGA).

However before connecting the PC to the arcade monitor, and before using ArcadeOS I have tried all the setup on a standard VGA monitor. All is working right, but that ZSNES sound issue remains... :cry:

Ive got a DOS setup @ home. Not sure which version I got on there, DreamSNES has been the emu I have the most experience with.

Stats are:
33MHZ
DOS 7.X
Soundblaster 16 ISA.

You should see if your card's DOS drivers can go into a sound blaster pro emulation mode. That's always been a good failsafe for me if I have problems. But I will definatly look at it tonight for you.

Hey Kernel - just to let you know you're not the only one having this problem.
I'm using a SBLive card, I get audio in ArcadeOS, AdvanceMAME, AdvanceMESS and all the other emus - but no sound at all from ZSNES.

It's driving me mad! :evil:

I managed to finally get the audio working - but I had to take out my SBLive card and use a different one (a PCI Fortemedia FM801-AS which I had lying about). I also had to juggle the device IRQs around quite a bit - I had to get the PCI card on IRQ7, and I had to disable the printer port (which was on IRQ7).
The environmental settings I'm using are A220 I7 D1 T4.

I had another go at getting it to work with my SBLive, but I just can't seem to find any settings which are compatible.

It seems that zsnes doesn't like Creative PCI soundcards...
I have a Fortemedia FM801-AU hope it works...

You are right.
The correct sentence is:
"It seems that DOS zsnes version doesn't like Creative PCI soundcards..."

Well then, let me elaborate - I never had any trouble for ZSNES, from the old <0.7 versions to now.
Of course, the fact that my card has a legacy mode for DOS apps while in win98 might be the cause...

Today I've tryed my Fortemedia FM801-AU.
Installed with no problems with settings: A220 I7 D1 T4

DOSMAME ---> Sound Works!
ADVMAME ---> Sound Works!
DosAMP ---> Sound Works!
Kgen98 ---> Sound Works!
Gencyst ---> Sound Works!
ArcadeOS ---> Sound Works!
ZSNES DOS 1.46 ---> Sound doesn't work :(

Also this time I have the same result as with the other sound cards...
How can it be possible with 3 different sound card type and only with Zsnes?
I'm so sad... :cry:

Did you try disabling the printer port in the BIOS? I had to do that to get mine working.

The real killer is that the FM801 outputs really scratchy, shitty quality audio.
I couldn't put up with it for more than a day, so I spent a few days setting up ArcadeOS/AdvanceMAME/ZSnes to work in Windows. Problem is, performance in Windows is slightly poorer than the DOS version - the DOS version was perfectly smooth for me, but the Windows one has little pauses every now and then. Very annoying.

I'm gonna have to go back to DOS again, I think. :(
