Best GameCube games?

Post by corronchilejano »

Title says it all. For all those that have a Wii or a Gamecube (until recently I got the Wii), what are the best games you've played, and which ones would you recommend?

Right know I could get my hands on Ikaruga, Eternal Darkness, Twilight Princess, Windwaker, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Mario Sunshine. What am I missing?

GET IKARUGA.

If you can get a hold of a couple of GC controllers, Smash is a blast.

... What kind of games do you like? I have like 40+ games, so I could point you towards some.

Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (it's short, but still fun), Metroid Prime 1 or 2, Tales of Symphonia, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, F-Zero GX, Viewtiful Joe 1 or 2, Resident Evil 1. That's all I can think of right now. You can also check out this list for more ideas.

Metroid Prime,
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes,
Super Monkey Ball,
Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't be put off by the look of these games, and don't get Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, it's a horrible port),
Pikmin,
Pikmin 2,
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2,
F-Zero GX,
Rogue Squadron 2,
Rogue Squadron 3 only if you just can't go without more Rogue Squadron (it's a damn pretty game though),
Resident Evil Remake,
Resident Evil CV,
Resident Evil 0,
P.N.03,
Paper Mario TTYD,
Tales of Symphonia,
Skies of Arcadia,
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles,
Zelda: Four Swords Adventures,

and there's the multiplatform games like
Beyond Good & Evil,
the Prince of Persia series,
Killer 7 (Cube version is best, no framerate problems),
and Soul Calibur 2.

I haven't played the Wii version of RE4 so I wouldn't know, but I do prefer the Cube version of Zelda TP. The game was made for that console, after all, and it would have been so much better had they spent some more time developing the actual game instead of porting it to Wii.

Some games I haven't played but which are apparently good:
Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes,
Time Splitters series,
Burnout 2,
Lost Kingdoms,
Lost Kingdoms 2,
Baten Kaitos,
Baten Kaitos 2,
Lego star Wars,
Lego star Wars 2,
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life

Alright, I have these:

Luigi's Mansion (I haven't even SEEN this box)
Mario Kart
Mario Party 7 (which I haven't really played)
Mario Sunshine
Mario Tennis
Smash Brothers Melee (Hell Yeah)
Twilight Princess (Both in GC and Wii)
Wind Waker (not such a big dissapointment)

I'll be getting Ikaruga tomorrow. The Metroid games are hard to get over here (50 bucks for each one, considering all the rest I got them for less than 20), it looks like all the game I can get are european or something, they simply wouldn't load on the Wii I bought from the US, so I had to mod it.

I like multiplayer games, GOOD multiplayer games. Mario Parties are ok I guess, but rounds are a bit long (over 2 hours). I'd also like to see some good rpgs, since I basically lost about 5 or 6 years of gameplay by not buying anything from Nintendo after the N64 and up until the Wii. Im buying anything I can put my eyes on, but since I'm short on $$$ I'd like to get the good ones first.

If you're looking for a really good RPG, get Skies of Arcadia. And don't be put off by the slow ass battle system.

I bolded the ones I back up, I haven't played the others, I really recomend them all. Very Nice selection blackmyst.

I could speak for hours about Timesplitters, Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia.

How is P.N. 03, I heard it's like the mercenaries mini-game in RE4, thinking about ordering it online, good idea?

If you are getting Viewtiful Joe and VJ2, finish the first one first, it's a lot harder, compared to the second one.

Hmm no, I wouldn't compare it to that. I could think of the combo system that's similar, but other than that they're not very alike.

It's more like, nearly every enemy has this specific method of avoiding their attacks by jumping, ducking, sidestepping/cartwheeling or finding cover in the scenery at the right times, and sometimes different methods of dealing damage to them (kind of like megaman bosses). You cannot shoot while you move, but I find this more of an asset to the gameplay than a flaw. And when you get good it almost feels like a rhythm game sometimes, especially with multiple enemies.

The levels each contain a bunch of "rooms" with a set number of enemies to clear, and you get a score summary after each room. Depending on how well you did (combo's) you get credits, which you can use to buy new suits or upgrade them. You also get these (energy-consuming) special attacks which are activated by streetfigher-ish d-pad maneuvers.

I love the music, and the graphic design, too (don't expect the scenery to change much from the sleek futuristic inside areas and the barren desert-like outside areas though). Oh, and she actually does the gyrating hips thing ingame. Hurr hurr. |:D http://youtube.com/watch?v=DoCkA_zS4nQ& ... ed&search=

I consider it a very hardcore game, especially on the higher difficulty levels. Some of the bosses are nuts. Should appeal to any numberscore-junkie. And there's definitely a tactical element to clearing a room with multiple enemies, without getting killed or damaged.

Lies, we all got that one for the shake shake. The music being good is just glazing.
[and yes, every move she does in that vid is feasible in-game]
The difficulty ramps from decent to pretty insane, but that's what I was looking for, so heh. (I did clear hard mode including all submissions with professional/destroyer ranks and the damn papillon suit ! TENGU PRO ! TENNNNGUUUUUU PRRRROOOOOO !!! I hate the ridiculously small GC dpad. Now give me back my soul you bitch.)

Let me list my recommended ones, redundancies ahoy... the games listed here are all pretty good. In no particular order...
Tales of symphonia: very good, very replayable, very win.
Final fantasy - crystal chronicles: you don't NEED friends. even for the worst puzzles. the game is fully enjoyable in 1p mode. Honest, multiplayer sessions are usually more frustrating than anything.
Legend of zelda - the wind waker: a bit short, but good ideas. Except for tingle, fuck him.
Baten kaitos: pretty good. Decent story, and a battle engine that's not mashing A ! Always a good point.
Sonic adventure 2 battle: very good, lots of stuff to do, varied gameplay, difficulty nicely scaled... but sometimes the controls are a bit crappy (i'm looking at you fucking Crazy Gadget stage).
Rune 2 (== lost kingdoms 2): fixed pretty much all the clunky issues that were in the first (however if you have cleared the first, then there's cameo and stuff, but heh)
Metroid prime: must have
Metroid prime 2: echoes: not-so-must have, but still nice have.
Paper mario 2 - the thousand year door: awesome. if you even only slightly liked PM1, grab that one. The battle engine got a hell of a buff.
Super mario sunshine: kinda sort of a must.
P.n.03: shake ! mmm...
F-zero gx: greatest fzero of all so far.
Sonic heroes: the level designs are absolutely brilliant. The difficulty was toned down a lot compared to SA2, as well (almost too easy...).
Super smash bros. melee: kirby kills pokemons, repeatedly.
Viewtiful joe: excellent concept. Henshin a go go, baby. Lots of unlockables, difficulty pretty high.
Ikaruga: woo, shield-based danmaku. What could go wrong ? Oh wait, don't answer that one.

I am suprised no one has mentioned Resident Evil 4, unless I scanned the thread to fast... Awesome game. Other than that, the Metroid Prime games are the best, as well as Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The Mario Party games are great for multiplayer.

I just wanted to mention that Resident Evil 0 is really hit-or-miss. I tried it; despite being mostly used to the tank controls from other Resident Evil games, I found 0's controls to be almost completely impossible. They ruined the game for me, and I didn't even make it off of the train.

I live in Colombia, here we use Mercado Libre (which is owned by E-bay anyway). The problem is that people only sell copies and I'm interested in the originals... the other problem is that every original GameCube game costs about twice what it should really cost, since like I said, they seem to come from the other side of the world, since there seems to be a problem with World of Nintendo here (the fact that you can find XBox 360s in their stores here... ehr... I dunno). I have a box for a game I don't even know what it is (it's in Jap), and I get a flickering image every time I try to run it.

Any multiplayer campaing games around? Even if it's 2 players.

You mean Co-op? Timesplitters 2 and 3 have it. Goldeneye style gameplay for the awesome.

you have a modded wii, and you're complaining about being able to find the games? I downloaded 90% of these mentioned GC games yesterday before this thread even existed.

Really? How odd. :\ I noticed nothing different from any other RE.

I'd say the train bit is among my favourite sections of all games in the series, actually. It's the atmosphere.

Hmm. On that note, anyone know any other good adventure-ish games with rainy moving train bits? :D

So, forgive my ignorance, what you're saying is you can't just go to ebay.com and use that? (you won't find pirate GC games on there.) Is it blocked, or FORBIDDEN or something?

Right now I want to know which games are GOOD. I mean, the only one I've really played is Smash Brothers. Ever since I got the Wii I haven't even used it, so most games are a total mistery to me. I only play it like 3 or 4 times a week, and between 30 and 60 minutes each time, so I'm getting more out of my GBA than out of my Wii. I am in no rush of getting the games, but I do want to have a good collection. I'm also getting NES and SNES original games (and well, some weird hacks).

I am now one of gods most pathetic creatures, a collector.

No, but shipping prices are usually too high and there's also a lot of tax problems right now. That's why I prefer more of a "local" trade. Venezuela, Peru, Panama... hell, for some reason we get european stuff cheaper.

Indeed, when ordering things online, we usually just order them to be shipped at a P.O. box or at the UPS Central, and just cross the border to pick up stuff. Avoids the nasty taxes.

If you liked Collecting and Megaman Legends' gameplay, you should try Gotcha Force. It's about getting some small robots that fight other small robots, every once in a while you get new robots/peices to build them. Eventually making teams with them.

The cool thing is that it plays like Megaman Legends.

Wow.
PN3's getting a LOT of love.
I give it my stamp of approval as well.

Insert Credit covered it pretty well, but I'll give my take anyways.

If you come in expecting something like Tomb Raider, you WILL be disappointed. That seems to be what happened to poor Vanessa.

PN3's closest living relative is Devil May Cry(PN3 was the same team, and it was their next game).
But if you come in expecting Dante In Space, you won't really be happy either, because PN3 took DMC, trimmed it down to the bare minimum, and polished it as far as it could.

You won't be bouncing off walls like Sonic on meth in PN3. In a lot of places you'll be dominating from within a 5-foot square.
You won't be stringing flashy attack chains together either. You have ONE standard attack, and flash isn't it's strong point.

The overdrives are slick-looking and absurdly powerful, but they have to be used strategically.
...
Or to kill bosses. Not because it's mandatory, but because it looks infinitely cooler.

If you've done enough old arcade games, there's an easy analogy.
PN3 is a modern-day Berzerk. It takes a methodical and precise approach to enjoy it.

Charging in blasting your guns at anything that moves and you WILL die. Painfully, repeatedly, and embarrassingly.
But if you spend a few minutes learning attack patterns, getting a feel for Vanessa's control, and just in general absorbing information, it's possible to brutally sodomize the game.

There's also a very wide gap between difficulty levels. It's one of the more blatantly obvious easy/normal gaps I've seen. Easy is a great set of training wheels, though you'll probably recognize that it's a tad broken when you one-shot a boss(it CAN be done in at least one point on easy mode if you have the right suit on).

And just as a note, Vanessa's sidestep move has a brief instant of invincibility in it. It's very hard to take advantage of, but IF you time it right, you can spin right through a laser bolt. Or laugh as an incoming missile detonates harmlessly on your shoulder.
...
God, I love dodging missiles.

As far as Metroid Prime goes.... it's worth the cost.
It's one of a handful of games I consider near-perfect.
Prime 2 is a good game, but not AS good.

Gotcha Force? Indeed it has, but it's a bit unconfortable to set it up, because if the other players don't have a memory card with their own save file, they can use the first player's "gotcha box".

So everyone is fighting with the same team and robots. If you are able to set up standard teams, small teams filled with cool robots, or everyone just makes up their mind before starting playing, it can get good.

Sounds good. Then it's Ikaruga, Gotcha Force and P.N.03. I have TimeSplitters here too

There's a guy that sells game packs with 21 games in it. It's a huge box and you never know what you'll get. It costs $120 and you get both good games and crap. Good thing is that they're "new".

Since Corronchilejano has a Wii, he might as well get the Wii edition of RE4. It's the best of both worlds (graphics and extras) and you get the better controls.
