Serious slowdown problems.

Post by ZZTFive »

I'm running 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium, and ZSNES version 1.51. Problem is, every time I start up ZSNES, it slows down my whole system, and takes at least 1 minute to start up.

This is even happening the first time I run the program. What's the deal? I don't have this problem with ANY other program on this computer.

Edit: It doesn't happen when I'm actually in a game, just when I'm in the GUI.

ZSNES is also very slow to start and close, and it freezes for a few seconds when I bring the cursor in or out of the window as well, or alt-tab back to it. Any ideas?

The problem SEEMS to be with the GUI, in my opinion.

ZZTFive: Mind posting some system specs? ZSNES 1.51 runs fine under 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium.

It is most likely powersaving that is confused. Disable it aka use performance settings over power saving settings.

I just set the power options to High Performance. No dice, program is still pausing whenever I bring the mouse cursor in and out of the window or alt-tab to and from it.

update your video drivers? 169.21? or does the 8400M GS not work with them?

nvidia doesnt list the 8400M GS.

NVIDIA doesn't offer laptop drivers on their site. They recommend you get any driver updates from the laptop manufacturer.

I think it might have something to do with the HP Pavilion's "QuickPlay" function. It keeps popping up over my games and interrupting me, and one time after I got it to close by accident, ZSNES worked fine. I've been looking for a way to turn it off permanently for weeks, but no one has offered a solution.

Any advice on that?

Try uninstalling the Hp quickplay driver package from Vista's remove programs thingy in Control Panel (I hate how they moved/renamed that in Vista, so annoying trying to look for it the first time)

I don't know how good of an idea that would be. HP has advised me that completely uninstalling QuickPlay would pretty much not let my laptop start up. I don't think I want to uninstall it, just disable it from running somehow AFTER it lets my laptop start up.

Eh, QuickPlay might use a modified bootloader. Blowing that out would probably require use of whatever passes for fixboot in Vista.

Err, if it didn't let you boot up your pc after you uninstalled it, then simply formatting the laptop will also turn your laptop into a huge paperweight.

I highly doubt that is the case, or else thered be a huge fuss on lots of sites saying how your laptop model turned into a brick after a user tried to get rid of the crapheap that is Vista and tried to install XP

This is why I hate laptops that come with OS'es preloaded, they bundle all their shit in..

I reason for the slowdown may be zsnes lack of support for dual core CPUs.
See this thread. franpa has posted a nice workaround this issue, that worked for me. :)

Maybe he should try to set the affinity to 1 cpu and see if that solves the issue.

Nope, just tried the affinity thing. My computer -still- pauses whenever I move the mouse cursor in or out of the ZSNES window, or alt-tab to or from it, whenever it's in the GUI.

Strangely enough, when it's actually running a game, it works fine; I'm only having problems with the GUI.

Hi tech support here,

I would try to disable Aero, you can do this in the next version in the options but for now if you right click the EXE and click properties then on the compatibility tab, click disable desktop composition and then click OK tell me if that helps.

I actually already have Aero off... Nonetheless, I gave your solution a try to see if it would work.

No joy. :(

My HP laptop has the same problem as you. Similar system except I have a Turion processor. I haven't found a solution yet.
