Problem with zsnes and Linux Ubuntu

Post by ibeleaf »

Hi, i've been using zsnes for years now on windows, and i jsut recently installed ubuntu on my system, and i was using zsnes for about a week with no problems,

but now when i launch zsnes the program will pop up for about a second and then just dissappear like it never existed... it's quite frustrating as i cant figure out what's causing it.

any help would be appreciated

note: im familiar enough with ubuntu, but not as much so as i was with windows, so a good explanation is probably needed if anyone knows a solution.

To see what the error is that is causing Zsnes to crash, you have to run it from a terminal. Open up a terminal and type Zsnes. Post the result here.

I have a problem that produces similar output to David's, but I have a different problem; there is no sound.

Code: Select all

ksib@ksib-pc:~$ zsnes

ZSNES could not find any joysticks.
I tried using the line

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir /home/ksib/.kde/socket-ksib-pc
but that didn't work for me. I got the output...

Code: Select all

ksib@ksib-pc:~$ sudo mkdir /home/ksib/.kde/socket-ksib-pc
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/ksib/.kde/socket-ksib-pc': No such file or directory
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try using OSS or some other libao option.

libao? Maybe I should have stated that I'm also a Windows user and just installed Ubuntu.

EDIT: Nevermind... I found the fix... I had to change something in the zsnesl.cfg file

libAoDriver="auto"
to
libAoDriver="sdl"

http://pearsfyh.blogspot.com/2007/11/so ... -tips.html

I hope this helps those out who just installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Hardy Heron)

Thanks for everything :)

Just to save you from getting burned elsewhere (particularly, on forums where there are many Linux users).

Don't pronounce the distro name after Linux. By the rules of the English language, "Linux Ubuntu" means that "Ubuntu" is owned by Linux, or that "Linux" is modifying "Ubuntu".

It is "Ubuntu Linux". Because the developers are taking "Linux" (and other GNU GPL/LGPL / whatever components) and modifing it. But All these things wrap around the kernel, Linux. So we call it Ubuntu Linux, in the same way we have "Slackware Linux", "Arch Linux", etc.

I really don't mean to nitpick. I'm actually doing you a favour.

Does it really matter?

This is not a port specific forum and frankly I'd rather have people give as much info as they can instead of giving very little info such as "Linux" without mentioning what distro they are using.

I'm just saying is all. If he goes to say, ubuntuforums.org, and says "Linux Ubuntu", people will dismiss him as "ignorant". I'm not saying that will happen here, or places similiar; only in places where moronic zealous rules.

I don't want to be horrible, but those are the facts.
Usually I wouldn't care, but I thought "hey, why don't I just spend 10 seconds explaining it to him, eh?".

It's only an issue with the distro has more than one OS.

Debian users are mostly Linux users.

However, there's also Debian FreeBSD, Debian OpenSolaris, Debian Hurd, and IIRC another one as well.

or instead of typing that you could've just explained and avoided being an asshole.

i just switched, i assume that tilda is the part of the file path that's specific to my computer but i still don't know where to start from to paste that... like is it in the lib or bin or usr or what?

there we go... didn't know that i actually had to put the tilda in the file name, i thought that was something you just added to shortcut... now i know "~" has a function.

i'm all set now, thanks for the help deathlike

You still got GNU/Linux and Ubuntu the wrong way round. It goes in this order:
Ubuntu GNU/Linux

The "8.04LTS Hardy Heron" bit is not nessesary.
Ubuntu GNU/Linux will do.

But then the GNU isn't needed in this case either. Saying only Linux as the whole OS is wrong. Saying GNU/Linux is right, since Linux is only 2% of the whole thing.
But that rule is only for the software in general. If it's a specific distro, you can just say "<name of distro> Linux".

so "Ubuntu Linux" is fine.
