PSX Gems you may have missed

Post by casualsax3 »

All of this talk about Parasite Eve 2 has got me thinking, what other PSX RPGs are out there that I've missed. Alundra springs to mind - everyone speaks highly of it but I never got around to playing it.

Any suggestions?

FRONT MISSION 3, with Megaman Legends and MML2, the only PS games I still own.

Have you played Grandia? One of the best RPG's on the system IMO, if not a little cheesy towards the very end.

Guardian's Crusade was pretty well made, a fairly unique charm to it. Still need to finish it some day. ):

I like Grandstream Saga a lot, though it may be nostalgia. Lots of anime cutscenes, nice storyline and a pretty original battle system, but opinions may vary.

That's a lot of G's.

I assume you know about the Breath of Fire's, Wild Arms, etc.

I think it's easier for us if you just tell us what RPGs you've played so far. Parasite Eve 2 and Alundra are very popular games, so maybe you've missed most PS gems.

Some suggestions: Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Wild Arms 1/2, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden 1/2, Vandal Hearts 1/2, Persona 1/2, Lunar SSS, Star Ocean 2, SaGa Frontier 1/2, Grandia, Arc the Lad 1/2/3, Tactics Ogre, Dragon Warrior VII...

More obscure (for me...): Beyond the Beyond, Vanguard Bandits, Hoshigami, Kartia, Legend of Legaia, Rhapsody, Azure Dreams, Thousand Arms...

All of them are great, if you like RPGs.

About the original topic ("PSX Gems you may have missed"), I think these are the best underrated PS games:
-Choro Q1/2/3
-Ghost in the Shell
-The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

There is a lot of games that I was never been able to play on the past 32-bit era.

R-Type Delta
Vagrant Story
Lunar 2 (Eternal Blue)
Raystorm
Eihänder
Rhapsody : Musical Adventure
Crash the Bandicoot (All the games)

Many more...

Seconded.

Also give the fear effect games a try.

Fear Effect=suck. :( I expected them to be better.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is a damn good game. Unfortunately, the load times are abysmal. Still, the game is worth it.

There are PC and 3DO versions of that, BTW.

I'm sure you've probably played it (maybe even mentioned it in a very old thread), but Castlevania SOTN is incredible. Play it if you missed out the first time around.

RAAAAAAARRRRRGH!!!!!

PS LUNAR AM SUCK! PLAY SEGACD!

*The Hulk calms down and turns back into mild-mannered Bruce Banner*

Umm, yeah...
Umihara Kawase Shun!
There's also "No One Can Stop Mister Domino", but that might actually more fun to say than play.

On a less niche note, and brushing against mainstream at times...
Here's some actual RPGs and strategy RPGs you may want to look at.

Vandal Hearts,
Koudelka,
Vagrant Story(an under-rated Square game{besides Chrono Cross}? Who knew?),
Kartia,
Tales of Destiny,
Star Ocean 2.

And not what you're looking for, but there's more to life than RPGs, so...
RayStorm,
RayCrisis,
Einhander,
R-Type Delta,
Silhouette Mirage,
Zanac X Zanac,
Qix Neo,
Dragon Valor,
Strider 2,
Asteroids,
ThunderForce V.

I've heard Tail of the Sun recommended, but never got around to playing it. I've also heard it requires you to read the manual.

You're already looking towards Alundra, which is good. Though it's an action-adventure, not an RPG.

Tales of Eternia. I do love the cameo, besides the various nice points in the game proper.

Legend of Mana. Because you always need more blaze crystals.

That game is too short and too hard.

It's like Contra but not as good(in the sense that Contra games own me up the ass and are also very short). If it was longer, and had some extra modes or something, I think it would have been a classic. The basic gameplay is there, definitely.

If somebody ever did a level hack of that game, I think I'd blow them. That's how much I'd appreciate it.

Did you just call Omega Boost hard? If that is the case Starfox 64 must be the hardest game ever made then.

I should mention my reflexes are permanently impaired due to a central nervous system disorder.

I also suck at games, action related ones especially.

These two facts combined=me throwing controller across the room.

Just got it.

It's nice that you can play the (updated) tracks from the previous games. :)
And the music is great as always.

I love that game. It's so much like Super Metroid, except it's Castlevania.
