How to force PAL games into 60 fps! (Little Tutorial)

Post by Sp00kyFox »

I want you to give a little tutorial how to speed up pal games from 50 fps to 60 fps with zsnes, like you can do it with a real modified pal-snes.
actually we have some advantages with an emulator.

so what is the sense of doing this? there are a few reasons for that:

1. 50 fps on a 60hz tft is not really fluid
2. you wanna play a specific game with 60 fps in your language which is only present on the pal verson
3. the game you wanna play only exists as a pal version (like terranigma)
4. you are so pro.. all the jump'n runs (or other genres) like super mario world are to slow for you... so grab the pal-version (which is already time adjusted) and speed it up

so many games are very easy to force into ntsc mode, but some need tricks.
I will post the solutions in such a order that if one fails just take the next one.. the last one should always work:

1. easy method:
just select ntsc mode in zsnes in the rom load window or start zsnes with the parameter -t

---

2. method 1 failed cuz the game tells you it isn't made for your region.
so grab the tool ucon64:

http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/index.php

and now remove the ntsc/pal/copy-protection from the rom with the folowing parameters.. example:

ucon64.exe -f -k Terranigma (E) [!].smc

now play the game with method 1

---

3. method 2 also failed.. well it's not very elegant but effective.
just start the game in pal mode and wait until you got to the title screen and now make a savestate.
now use method1 and the "blabla not your region"-screen will appear.. load the savestate and your are in the game but in ntsc mode with 60 fps.

have fun

(it could happen that a few games are producing some glitches when forcing them into ntsc)

step 4: offer your personally hacked romz0rs for download on the internet, and have yet another corrupt game floating around for people to complain about it glitching in weird ways, ala Super Mario Kart "I can't pick up coins".

Running a game out of intended specs is a sure way of causing really awful bugs to crop up (if not making the game fail altogether), even if you prefer the convienence factor. That's why you want to run the games with the proper default region.

Locking a terrible thread now.
