New computer; old zSNES copy and new copy neither work

Post by Xuncu »

Used to have a WinXP laptop, that died.
Luckly, had all my data saved.
New Vista compy, HD/widescreen, ect.

Old zSNES.exe didn't work, downloaded a new one, didn't work either.

Both times, the window does appear, but it stays a black square (none of the menu). Eventually, it reports as nonfunctioning/unresponsive,a dn windows closes it.

I'm nto srue why it doesn't work, but if ya got any ideas, I'd like to hear it.

In meantime, I'm using snes9x to just play.... god, I miss turbofire and rewind/fast forward. They got no options to config any and all that. XP

Isn't this in the documentation or FAQ? I forget the exact solution, but it's not far!

You mean:
Q: Why do I get a black (or corrupted) box when I start up ZSNESw?

A: First of all, make sure that you have the latest version of DirectX
installed (see above question). If that didn't help, then check
your desktop color settings and make sure that the number of colors
is set to either 16bit or 32bit (since ZSNESw will only work with those
modes).
That? -_-;;;;

And...... uhhhhmmm...

Technically, yes, since he didn't say more than that. He only said "involves", so I dunno if there's more, or if there's more to it (and what exactly it accomplishes).

And yeah, Direct X is up to date, and of course, HD is at 32-bit color.

Pressing alt and enter together forces ZSNES to go fullscreen, which should solve your problem.

in which directory do you have zsnes installed?

zsnes will fail on first-run under vista if the current user doesn't have write permissions in its location (e.g. if you've installed it to c:\program files (or whatever %ProgramFiles% is)).

Hmm, that sounds like a promising lead to follow

Well, I got it under C:\Users\(my profile)\Downloads\games\SNES
(yeah, it's my computer, so no admin stuff to worry about)

I know there's a "Program Files (x86)" folder that I am unsure as to what the difference is.

actually, it's vista, so you DO have admin stuff to worry about. regardless of your (the user's) permissions, regular applications run as a standard user unless they're explicitly elevated. double-check write permissions for "everyone" in that directory.
Xuncu wrote:I know there's a "Program Files (x86)" folder that I am unsure as to what the difference is.
that's the program files directory for 32-bit apps. btw, you're running 64-bit vista (if you didn't know).

care to tell us what brand/model laptop you bought so we don't need to make any other guesses about your hardware/OS?

Have you tried deleting the zsnesw.cfg file to see if ZSNES will load properly when using the default configuration?

Where was I? AH;

Yeah, tried deleting config file. Doubt that was it anyways; never got far enough to where I could config anything. No menu, no alert boxes, no graphics; just an unresponsive black square.

Did the link, didn't change anything. XP

Also, this may/may not be related, but my instinct says it could be:
Whenever I get a security alert/prompt (like when installing something; "Allow this program to continue?", ect), my screen goes black for a moment frist, then continues as normal with the alert. Since I got it, it's been doing that, dunno if any setting I have is..... I dunno. Mostly, it's just annoying.

It goes black, like when you change the resolution on your screen... twice, it actually did, apparently, cause a change in my resolution.
Like I have it set at 1920x1080, and those two times it got put to 800x600.
