Pixelation issues with my new Windows install.

Post by Earthbound_X »

Ever since I installed Window's 7, ZSNES has been really pixelated, I'm using 1024x896 R W.

Before the format, it didn't look so pixelated.

It's not because of Windows 7, since I reinstalled XP to see if it was the cause, and it looked real pixelated on XP too.

I'd post a screen shot, but they come out normal looking.

I still have the same monitor and same screen res.

Anyone else have an issue like this, or knows how to fix it?

Video card?

If you're using an NVidia card and don't want pixilation, you want NVidia to handle the scaling... and you probably want to run it full screen (but not at that resolution).

Ah! That could be the reason!

I have a GTX 260.

You wouldn't happen to know how to do that would you? I've been looking though the Nvidia control panel, and I can't find the option.

There is a spot where it mentions scaling, but it's all grayed out, and won't let me change it.

Here's a picture of what I mean.

See, it's greyed out, and won't let me select anything.

try switching to a lower rez, then going back to that panel.

Nope, I've tried that before.

I found this topic.

'http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=103 ... stcount=13

That NVtray thing didn't work, so I've been trying to find the RUN option, it's not under Start for Window's 7, anyone know where it is?

Edit: Never mind, I found run, and none of those commands work.

Probably because it's from 2007.

I set it up to use the monitor's native res, and then the option to use NVidia's scaling becomes available. Once then, you want to use a non-native resolution, and the blur you want should appear.

Well it seems to think my native resolution is 1920x1080.

I have a 1680x1050 monitor, so if I go to 1920x1080, the scaling options are replaced by a desktop re size option. Plus it makes my screen look worse.

The current Windows 7 nVidia drivers are based on a broken set of Vista drivers.
The scaling control won't work, even if you get it to ungray.

Well that explains it.

Guess I'll have to deal with this pixelation, though I have heard of some filters for ZSNES that smooth out graphics, anyone know about them?

Edit: Like this.

Image

I have found some filters, I just have no idea how to use them, The only filter ZSNES 1.51 seems to have is the Greyscale filter.

Ok! Awesome! for googling, I found this.

http://www.fantasyanime.com/emuhelp/emu ... videomodes

It mentions a way to use filters, which are already in ZSNES, they just don't show up unless you use certain resolutions.

This seems to be a way to fix my pixelation problem!

So thanks all for the advice!

Wouldn't have found that unless you mentioned scaling.

Edit: Well, the filters aren't perfect, but they are better then nothing.

Use a D mode, like "640x480 D" to get access to filters.

Think I'm gonna use 1024x896 DR W with HQ filter x3.

Still working it out.

Yeah Interpolation make it's look like it did before I installed 7, though I can't see myself using it, because it hurts my eyes.

no they aren't. the scaling may be broken, but thats just because of buggy DDC information coming from crappy HDTV's and LCD screens with incomplete DDC data.

DirectDraw on Vista and Windows 7 is emulated, Bilinear is not enabled by default like it was in XP.

Would you know a way to get that to work on 7?

Why do people like bilinear filtering? It's so ugly. :(

Nearest neighbor scaling 640x480 up to monitor's native resolution looks even worse.

Why not nearest neighbor scale 256x224 to his monitor's native resolution? :o

Better at least than huge unfiltered square boxes for pixels... or hqxx... or anything besides NTSC for that matter.

Then they've pushed a major update since I went back to XP.

Trust me, I'd rather have that then have to use filters, does anyone know a way to enabled it in Window's 7 like Squall mentioned?
