help with L, R + A combo in Chrono Trigger?

I'm at the part where you need to hold down l, r and a to open something, down near the food storage? it just wont work when i press the keys, I've tried changing them, I've tried setting all three to one key, I've tried setting a key combo. any ideas?

How do you have your key combo set? That should do it, assuming you did it correctly.

maybe this is easier, okay, what am i doing wrong x) should i have delays, for the combo you're supposed to press and hold L + R, and press a. or is there any other way of saving it im missing?
