SPC2ROM + Super Wild Card DX2 = insert next disk

Post by JILost »

As stated in the topic, I'm using SPC2ROM to convert SPC files into SWC/SMC files (and then using ucon64 to fix the checksums). When I attempt to run these files in ZSNES, BSNES, or pretty much anything else, they run fine and are not reported as bad ROMs. I then move one of them onto a brand new floppy disk and move it over to my Super Wild Card DX2; the SWC loads the entire file and then asks for the next disk. WHY???

Why do these ROM images load in every emulator but then not on the SWC? I've checked the ROM headers and everything seems to be in place, fixed the checksums, and even tried every option in SPC2ROM. No change.

Incidentally, in the area where the SWC should be showing the ROM title (not the filename), it instead shows a garbled mess of characters. Just FYI.

If it matters, I'm running Windows XP, my computer doesn't have a printer port, and I don't have a DiskDual. Any help is greatly appreciated.

try using the ucon64 to convert the file to swc format. the header on your rom is telling the wildcard there's multiple disks. if swc format doesn't work, try fig (pro fighter.)

I thought that was it, too, but like I said in my previous message, I checked the header and that particular byte was set correctly. I took your advice and tried converting the ROM to FIG, though; and while the ROM title no longer showed garbage on the Wild Card (it showed up blank this time), it still insisted on the next disk.

How exactly does one go about manually editing the header in ucon64? Running with no commandline arguments doesn't mention such an option (though I know it exists) and the Windows frontend is awful in that it never returns the correct path for the ROM (it always returns the path to the frontend executable with the ROM name tacked on it) and always tells me that the option I'm using requires a ROM filename to be passed even though I specifically point it to my ROM file. Sigh. Lazy programmers suck.

Anyway, if you have trouble following that paragraph or it doesn't make sense (I just woke up), I can state things a bit more explicitly. Even Anti-Resonance (the coder of SPC2ROM) suggested I use a program of his to upload an SPC file directly to the Wild Card...which would be great if I had a parallel port. Ugh.

From experience, I think it is a problem caused by Windows XP. I have always had problems using floppies on my wildcard formated under Windows XP. Try using a DOS utility to transfer the files to floppies, that may help.

Also, try copying the files under the Windows DOS prompt. Type 'command' not 'cmd' into the run window.

Good suggestion by Overload.

ALL disks that I use with my copier, I format with my copier.

I also use standard pro fighter headers which seems to be the most common format header already applied to ROMs in my collection. My copier reads them and they are just 3 or 4 bytes with limited information.

The disk information is not present in the header on those. It will only ever use multiple disks if I split the ROM onto multiple disks.

I've even gotten games with completely blank(filled with 0x00) headers to load. My copier seems to default to some sort of auto detect. That's another thing you can try.
