Which Virtual Console titles have you purchased?

Post by Ichinisan »

NES:
Zelda
Solomon's Key

I left my unopened Wii points card at a friends house and haven't picked it up yet. Because I can get a discount on the retail price, I didn't want to spend more than $10 on Wii points online. So I bought 10,000 points, just enough to purchase Zelda NES and Solomon's Key NES (because I was curious and want to encourage third-parties to provide more VC content). I still plan to purchase Super Mario 64 and F-Zero.

The Japanese launch lineup will include Super Mario World and Super Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong Country).

The US lineup SUCKS.

[Update]
Sega Genesis:
-Sonic the Hedgehog
N64:
-Super Mario 64

Final Fantasy VIII

EDIT:

But seriously, when I get a Wii, I will be downloading a lot of titles. Interesting, Gamespot is reviewing Virtual Console games right along with new games. Pretty neat, if I do say so myself.

I hope some SNES and N64 titles that I never got to play on the original systems will be available on the Virtual Console.

I'm curious how those games play since they are emulated. Are they perfect to the originals?

Of course not. For example, the Wii doesn't even have enough horsepower to emulate the N64 perfectly. It absolutely has to use HLE if it wants to achieve 60fps on a ~750mhz PPC processor. N64 games run at 480p, and obvious side effects of increased resolution occur such as edges of polygons slightly breaking apart and such.

As far as NES/SNES, I seriously doubt Nintendo or any VC users care enough to worry about non-visible emulation issues such as VRAM writes outside of vblank. Virtually no commercial games do that sort of thing, so why worry about it?

What I want is some ROM images from the Wii so we can start looking at the format and try to get our own images onto the console. I'd like to run some of my test ROMs on it and see just how (in)accurate the emulation actually is.

mmm, my snes works fine. And thanks to emulation, I can safely say I didn't really miss much. Except maybe Wedding Peach. I suppose Terranigma as well. Squeak

no wii points or vc for me.

There are slight defects in the sound when playing Zelda. I believe they must be using the same emulator that came with the Zelda collection for Gamecube. I didn't see anything wrong when playing Mario 64, except the colour of the Chomp Chomp's mouth was a bit off. Bomberman 93 seemed to work quite fine too. I haven't tried any other games.

I just bought a points card yesterday and downloaded Golden Axe and Bomberman '93. Some advantages of VC include the game working most of the time and definitely no intro hacks. I would miss netplay and all the interesting Super Mario World hacks out there.

Most of the time?! I should hope they always work!

Uh... OK. Hacks aren't about the VC but about the ROM you're using. And netplay... yeah. That's what emulators are for.

The Zelda NES game has the modified copyright date of the Animal Crossing version that can be transferred to GBA.

Super Mario 64 was playable on GC by injecting the ROM into the ripped emulator from the Zelda OoT+Master Quest Bonus Disc. Like every other emulator, shader-like effects (like the particulation effect when Mario teleports) are not duplicated. He simply fades with transparency like every emulator on PC. This is true on the GC and on the Wii.

Overall it still looks, feels, and plays perfectly. If anything, I might perceive slight latency in the controls...but it's hard to say for certain.

It seems like the whole VC system is "infested" with DRM, though I am not sure because I haven't even tried to transfer the titles to an SD card and read them on a computer.

As far as I've seen, not in the least for Genesis games. I don't even have a Wii, and I already found that Sonic had lots of dropped sounds, and Ristar has graphical glitches. I've also heard that some games freeze sometimes. Nonetheless, the very limited savestating is to be applauded, considering those @#$% oldschool games with no save features (dinner! but mom i'm almost at the final boss!)

Some issues will be fixed, hopefully, but if I were getting a Wii (I'm not), I'd get it for Wii games and GCN games I missed more than anything else.

I have a feeling Virtual Console is going to be one of the biggest video game flops of 2007.... After all the hype, they really haven't delivered anything worthwhile.

Seriously. WHY THE HELL AREN'T THESE ON THERE?

Other N64 games may be too advanced for the current incarnation of the N64 emu software, but why is PILOTWINGS missing?! It was an N64 launch title right along with Super Mario 64.
-Pilotwings
-F-Zero X
-Super Smash Bros
-Pokémon ____

Why no Gameboy stuff? The classic GB Mono lineup could yield LOADS of IP that most of the VC users have never seen/played before.
-Zelda:LA (excellent)
-Donkey Kong '94 (awesome)
-Metroid II
-Kirby ____
-Super Mario Land series
-Wario Land series
-Pokémon ____

SNES. Super Mario World. These go hand-in-hand. Nintendo is holding out for some reason.
-Super Mario World
-Donkey Kong Country
-Super Metroid
-Super Mario Kart
-Zelda:LttP
-Tetris Attack (AKA Panel de Pon, Puzzle League...etc)

-Zelda II AoL
-Super Mario Bros, 2, 3 (3 has advanced mappers, so I understand why it's not there *yet*)

There are no licensing issues with these titles like there would be with games like Killer Instinct or Goldeneye, yet Nintendo has not put them on the VC.

The Japanese can purchase DKC and Super Mario World at launch. The US VC lineup looks neglected. There's sooo much wasted IP right now...it's not even funny.

Nintendo has demonstrated GBA emulation in their Gamecube interactive kiosks, so we know that it should be trivial to put some GBA software on the VC...but retailers would probably be very upset with Nintendo.

Why defeat sales if you are still selling the games for GBA or DS?

Until they are gone from the market, it will cut into profits anyways.

Of those that I listed, only the following are currently being sold on GBA:
-Zelda:LttP (re-issued in player's choice series)
-Super Mario World (re-issued in player's choice series)
-Tetris Attack (Dr Mario/Puzzle League, limited availability)
-Donkey Kong Country (bastardized version, most stores no longer have stock of this title)

There is no reason for nintendo to show all its cards when it doesn't need to.

Maybe it would leave a bad impression...
Wikipedia wrote:It received good reviews upon its initial launch — Nintendo Power gave it a 4.5/5 and most gaming magazines and websites have a similar opinion. In spite of this, some critics and gamers, looking back after the release of Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, consider it the weakest title of the series. In retrospect, it is often viewed merely as a connection between the first and third released titles and as an expansion on Metroid morphology.

I think not.. Instead, it has high probability in my opinion to turn customers away. Any demand I had for virtual console has disappeared as well as more of my faith in Nintendo. I thought Virtual Console had huge potential, but potential by itself means absolutely nothing. You have to use it.

and that equals putting all the stellar titles out at launch and watching it stagnate from there? while they may need a few more blockbusters now, the wii is going to be on the market for quite awhile.

they could even add in other consoles as time goes on. it'd only take a web-update.

As licensing issues are worked out, I would expect a somewhat steady stream of third-party titles and some 1st party titles to keep the service interesting.
