It's ok, but the difficulty level is much higher, and relies A LOT on backtracking and skipping bosses at times. This does not give me the same feeling as the original game in any shape of form, even though the changes are impressive.

I agree completely. Technically speaking, it's great. However, the game design is not my cup of tea at all for the reasons you stated.
