Not to worry, this is just my first test render with the new lighting. I'll be correcting the lighting as I go along after getting my real controller in the mail.

small update:

Changed to a wooden desktop. Better contrast. Pretty much waiting on my controller to come in the mail (or some new pics from Grin) before I can get serious on the d-pad.

My favorite ugly part of the whole US SNES look was the wavy fringe on the botton of the console deck. Who did they get to design the thing? Christopher Lowell??

Another update. The new pic is my first test with Mental Ray rendering. I simulated a white desktop with lamp. I also changed the material on the color buttons to a solution designed specifically for plastics, so they should look a little more realistic. For the perspective shot on the white desk, I...

I spent an hour combing through every national and worldwide ebay auction for SNES controllers. Of those, over 800 were for the crappy USA version and only about 10 were for the European version. Of those ten, I picked out the best condition and did a buyout for 10 GBP. It ended up costing me a litt...

I'm in agreement with byuu in that the US controller sucks ass. I like to pretend the Euro controller is the official SNES one ;) Anyway, I'm hoping Grin can set me up with some snapshots of his pad. I'm running out of info I can gleam from the limited angles we get from net pics. Ideally, I'd like ...

Updated the image. Now ALL the face fonts have been redone to exactly match the real controller.

updated the image again with just a couple minor changes based on Grins tips. I've removed the bumpmapping from the arrow pits and the middle buttons. I also toned down the gloss on the middle buttons, though I can tone it down even further if needed. Have no fear about the start & select font. ...

byuu, of course you can use it for whatever means you like. If you don't mind, you should wait until I render it using a soft white backdrop first. I will switch from scanline rendering to "mental ray" which allows for more realistic lighting that actually bounces off the nooks & crann...

Thanks for the tips, Grin! I need to point out the select and start buttons are actually sticking out even higher than the XYBA buttons, but dont seem to cast as much of a shadow. I'll be working on getting this more accurate as I go along. I knew the crosspad actually concaves a bit toward the cent...

Another big update, and my apologies for the large image size, but I wanted to show the bump-mapping work on the plastic. I've made a bunch of fixes: 1. Nailed the font down to exactly matching the real thing (hand-rendered). 2. Adjusted the crosspad and middle button plastic to be flat instead of g...

On another note, can the admins make it so people cannot change their forum nick? Nick-changing should be off limits IMO.

A couple of game I found surprisingly good were Kid Niki and Legendary Wings. Kid Niki was arguably better than the arcade, and I enjoyed completing it. Legendary Wings was a game I would complete in something like 30 minutes while friends watched. As long as you took care to gain the maximum weapon...

Could you render it with a white background (or as a 32-bit PNG) so that it's closer to the wiki picture? Yes, this step is listed on my things left to do. I really need to do a better font of the "SUPER NINTENDO". If worse comes to worse, I can actually hand-render each letter and get it...

Actually its the exact same narrowness as the real controller (spacially speaking). The font itself is the problem, and was part of my request for a better font if anyone finds one.

Most of the issues you listed are a result of the camera setting I used. Its set to a very low field of view of 20 degrees, which causes the crosspad and the middle buttons to lose a little depth. Its also creating the illusion of the shoulder buttons tapering. If I go to a default 45 degree view, t...

Big update! I've nearly finished the controller as you can see from the updated preview. About the only thing that I'm nitpicking myself over is the font logo. If somebody can find an even better font match, I'd be quite greatful. The current one I'm using is a modified Eurostyle font, which is very...

The Ascii pad owns all, though. Quite simply the best 3rd party controller ever made, and the only US SNES controller with the proper colors!

Updated image again. This time I redesigned the crosspad to be entirely independant of any texture files. Fritzroy will be happy to hear this new version has ZERO image mapping 8) Anyway, it ended up working out for the better because now I have more control over the lighting on the crosspad. When y...

I updated the progress image. Just some more work on the outer shell casing. I still need to add in the little notch at the top where the cord comes out, and also need to apply the Super Nintendo logos & text to the casing. Then all that's left is the middle buttons, crosspad, shoulder buttons &...

No problem at all on the model files being open source. When I finish the entire controller, I'll post the model file for download. Beware though its formatted for 3DS Max 2009 64-bit, which is a very expensive program. I suppose an alternative is for me to render a wire frame version, which is easy...

Snes controller progress:

Work in progress.
Current list of things left to do:

1. Finish shaping back case.
2. Play around with some environment reflection on the color buttons.
3. Shape a complete cord with socket.
4. ???
5. Profit!
