Re: 3D Support?

Sprites can be treated all on equal plane in games like this. Except sprites can go behind bg layers, or in front of them. Whenever that happens, the effect will go bonkers. :/ The idea would be the sprite plane would be set to be behind one specific background layer (acting as the foreground) for ...

Re: 3D Support?

It would be interesting to see the results of general rudimentary 3D based on the background layers in an SNES emulator. While it obviously will be highly flawed, there are a number of games which I believe it would work very well for. Platformers with parallax scrolling come to mind. In many cases ...

Re: Article about how desktop UIs changed over the years

I posted this and my opinion over at RHDN. I thought it was a nice article and would be good food for discussion. :) I generally agree with your sentiments having also been a user since the Windows 3 days.

Re: byuu on ars

I have to laugh a bit when I hear people talking about code as a substitute for documentation. Un-commented code like BSNES (I haven't seen MAME) will never be a substitute for documentation. First, it's useless to anyone who isn't proficient in the language it was written in. That means it's useles...

Re: Is Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean worthy

The Baten Kaitos games are amongst the best RPGs for Gamecube. I think they are worth a play-through. The card battle system takes some getting used to. Some people might not like it. I found the Baten Kaitos: Origins to have the more agreeable battle system of the two for me. As grin mentioned, the...

Re: ZsneSK Unoffical release of zsnes which uses "Kaillera"

That's very extremely untrue. Abandonware is an ethical stance, not a legal classification. The rights to those out-of-print games either reside with the original company, or with whoever bought the shattered carcass of that company when they went under. Even in cases where NO ONE KNOWS where the r...

Congratulations sir on 10 years! You've got a unique site that caters to a niche crowd. It may not get thousands of hits, but it is appreciated by the people who do go there seeking the kind of information only SNES Central has. :)

Re: 20 Years of Super Mario World, and the Super Famicom

This article is making me want to replay Super Mario World again. It also makes me feel old that 20 years has passed already! It was one of those games that balanced everything right to make for a fun experience. That's a tough formula to get right and is lost in many subsequent games and ROM hacks....

Re: 3D Support?

Most BG modes could technically lend themselves to background to foreground rendering in their screen layering. However, there are many different possibilities when the background and sprite priority bits come into play. There are also a number of ways games construct the screen with the backgrounds...

Re: Hard Drive Education

I swear by two things. 1.) Less Heat and 2.) Less usage. The two will equate to longer lifespan. My case has adequate cooling and temperatures are relatively close to ambient. I make sure all my drives power down after 10 minutes of inactivity. Then, I make sure my PC doesn't use the hard drive unle...

I was able to play through the game to completion with this patch on the real SNES. The only issues I encountered were those listed in the readme file. That pyramid with the switches was probably the most difficult part to get past due to glitches. Typically switching back and forth and moving a bit...

The only thing that is really moving the 64-bit transition now is increased addressing for more memory and peripherals. I would think the fact it is included with all purchases of Windows 7 and is available for more editions of Windows 7 are the reason. Windows 7 has been out for 3 weeks, unless yo...

The only thing that is really moving the 64-bit transition now is increased addressing for more memory and peripherals. If 32-bit were still sufficient for this, 64-bit still wouldn't be catching on. I imagine much of the same will occur. We will have to start utilizing all 64-bit can offer us and s...

It seems you get more for your money with a Netbook though. The LCD screen is much smaller on Pandora. I understand that's desirable for the product, however it should theoretically make the device cheaper than an equivalent Netbook. The hardware on a Netbook seems a bit beefier as well, though I ca...

I was able to complete the game using the two player patch. There were a few tricky spots, and that was one of them. Going back to 1 player and/or witching back and forth between the characters typically resolved many things.

Most in the ROM hacking community also favor not using pre-patched ROMs because most don't want their work being distributed with the ROM for obvious reasons. Requests from the community to remove said items from lists such as GoodSNES, specifically to Cowering for example, go ignored. It may techni...

Most games send a program to the APU and the data for the current song + sound effects. Most of these programs don't write anything back and don't expect any more data, which is why *.spc plugins (Winamp etc.) don't have to emulate a SNES, too. Well to clarify, the APU sends something back in many ...
