I don't think these idiots are going to get anything out of this. Does anyone else think they have a snowball's chance in hell of actually getting a judgement against sony?

Immersion did it.

Though, yeah, this is a bit more extreme.

yeah they won't get shit. it's a patent for multi processors, it's too vague, and though any multi processor system needs common memory to synch the processors, I'm sure the ps3 does not do it in exactly this way. it really makes me want to patent the way human lungs mix air with blood, that way I can sue every human and demand they are destroyed and they pay for my legal fees (just like these asshats!)

With something as broad as that, you could sue Sony, Intel, AMD, even Microsoft. They're not getting anything there.

They should be suing IBM, since they actually make it.

It's too vague, I really think it's a frivolous lawsuit, waiting for Sony to settle. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if Sony bought the patent from IBM, or Sony made the processor and IBM is just mass producing it.

Who developed the processor?

Ha, they want to take away and destroy all of their Cell chips. Brilliant.

money grubbers

they wished the Cell was that smart. you have to program each unit individually, no processor has the smarts yet to break things down that much.

I didn't even know they allow such generic patents. Sony needs a kick or ten to the ass but suing them claiming they're infringing such a retarded patent will not work.

I have heard tales of people that actually create ghost companies and register overly broad patents waiting for somebody to create something that APPEARS to use such concept and then suing them.

Guess it's real.

That's why people hate patents.

Indeed. We are facing a problem in the industry I work for where some goof got a patent granted to him for measuring relative humidity and sending the results wireless.

I had to read the patent. It's insanely broad and generic. It's obvious people in the patent office don't have a brain. It outlines using a 'measuring instrument' and sending the results to a 'wireless device', crap like that. None of those terms are even defined.

He patented a process, a general process at that, which could be accomplished 1000 different ways. But the fact of the matter is he was granted a patent. So, my company and our competitors are all facing an issue where we are readying our own products that do this, but have been threatened by lawsuit if we release for patent infringement. We've got some patent lawyers on the job.

But you know what the saddest part in the Sony case is? These guys are very likely to get settlement money despite being in the wrong.

All this US-patent thing is totally wrong... I wouldn't give a fuck if we weren't signing the stupid TLC ("Tratado de Libre Comercio", that's something like Open Foreing Trade Treaty) that will basically makes us accept patents from the US with USs regulations...

Our National Science Comitee was already drowning anyway.

Ah, Free Trade Agreements have nothing to do with patents. Tehy are more about "Let us get all this things inside your country, duty free, and eventually you will be able to do so if you accomplish our quality standards.. In about 20 years."

Yeah, Sony has been hurt a lot by this lawsuits, I bet they settle.

Gas extraction by osmosis (and binding to a metal ion) is patented.
Fortunately they don't sue biological organisms using it, probably because it's so friggin obvious who got the idea first between nature and us.
