Apparently there's a shortage of these in the standard academic lines, so they don't disregard people with enough adaptability to fit the job.
Seeing as I did way enough maths to dive right in, they hired me instead of trying to lure some other dude from another company (which yields more risk).
My knowledge is widely enough spread that I'll always waste part of it, anyway. Might as well waste the part that doesn't land me the job.
