Book I read a long time ago

I remember reading a book where the protagonist was young and either her or her brother had diabetes. They carried lifesavers around with them. That's about all I remember. I believe it was popular/well known enough to be required reading in some scools.

Any clues?

No, it was in those years when (In the northeast US at least) you read Catcher in the Rye, Raisin in the Sun, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984... that sort of vein.
