It kind of makes me remember about Rome. Many who decry America to the press and cameras privately prefer to send their loved ones here to take advantage of our success brought about by secular education, gender equality, meritocratic democracy and the primacy of law.

This comparison is old, tired, and stupid. I don't remember gender equality and secular education when I studied Rome anyway.Metatron wrote:This comparison is old, tired, and stupid. Hell, if you wanted to compare the US with Rome, you could at least find a quote in which, you know, you could compare them.

When Rome took over someplace, the SAME people they often fought against (which they called barbarians) commonly became mercenaries for the empire. "Barbarian" princes commonly gained citizenship and sent their children to study in Rome, even if they once said they hated Rome.

Dude, you do know that "sending princes/princesses/queens" and the like to Rome were a way to keep control of the "Rulers" of the conquered lands?Corronchilejano wrote:*SIGH*

Hell, during the year, they could or had to swap between them for a short time.

Of course. Regardless of the reason, my point was simply the parallel hipocresy of "I hate" and "I do". Probably for different purposes, but alas a very similar picture.Joe Camacho wrote:Dude, you do know that "sending princes/princesses/queens" and the like to Rome were a way to keep control of the "Rulers" of the conquered lands?Corronchilejano wrote:*SIGH*

It's not hipocresy if they don't have a choice.Corronchilejano wrote:Of course. Regardless of the reason, my point was simply the parallel hipocresy of "I hate" and "I do". They didn't directly destroyed Rome. It was pretty beat up already, precisely by the differences between their politics.Neo Kaiser wrote:Besides after that the barbarians destroyed Rome. At least that is one of the theories.
