cannot set up ps2 conroller

i have a madcatz controller for ps2, i have it plugged in correctly, when i go to config, then controller one, i cant change the keys by pressing the buttons, im not sure if thats how i do it. Can any of you help me? I REEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY wanna play megaman X

First thing's first... does the gamepad work in other emulators and especially the test app in the game controllers option of the control panel?

also, you have the config set to KEYB/JOYSTICK right?
