Ubuntu 5.10: Zsnes won't run

It seemed to install fine. When I try to run it, this is what I get.

Could not set 512x448 video mode: No I/O port permissions

I've never seen this problem with ubuntu so I wouldn't even know where to start to fix this. Where did you get your binary from?

I downloaded zsnes and compiled from source. I got a few errors earlier while attempting ./configure due to unmet dependencies, but I filled those...
