Newbie with a couple of questions

Post by ladybass0711 »

Hello:

I recently purchased this program. But I got version 1.36. Whenever I click to download the newer version, it will not download properly. It downloads but when I go to extract the files it says file is corrupted.
How do I update my version to a newer verision?

Also with this build, I cannot save. I get an error, and it says unable to save. Maybe I am doing it incorrectly, but when I am in a game, I hit the esc key, scroll down to "save state" but it comes up with an error of unable to save. I am running Windows XP home.

Maybe the issue with saving will be fixed once i figured out how to update to the latest software. Any ideas?

Purchased? It's free. Ask for a refund.

Right click the link on the ZSNES.com main page and select "save as". Save the .zip file to your desktop. If the file is already on your desktop, delete it then try it again.

If you're trying to run ZSNES from a CD/DVD, it's not going to save. Put it in a folder on your hard drive.

Can you please walk me through that. I have it downloaded now, the updated version, but there is no "save folder"

As far as paying for it, it came with 600+ games

It is also illegal to sale said games. And you need to create a folder and name it "saves" or whatever you want to.

Do I also need to put all my SNES_ROM files in that same folder? And how do I direct it to the saves folder to save?

ZSNES is a free and open-source program. You should not be asked to pay for it in an unmodified form. Also, the latest official version is v1.42 which means you payed for an outdated program that you shouldn't have had to pay for in the first place.

What just took place is illegal. The person that sold the CD to you broke the law and you are doing the same by keeping the CD.

Now that we've settled that, I'll answer your questions.

To update to the newest version of ZSNES, I recommend going to http://zsnes.ipherswipsite.com/. On the left column of the web page, you will find a link to download the latest WIP release of ZSNES. A WIP release is a "Work In Progress" release and although it should not be considered official it contains the latest bug fixes and features and is, more often than not, stable.

When you finish downloading ZSNES, create a new folder for it somewhere, maybe in "My Documents" (I'm assuming you're using Microsoft Windows), and extract the .ZIP file there. You should be able to, without further hassle, run ZSNES.

Now onto something else. Games.
Almost any Super Nintendo game you find online for free is illegal. However, the majority of people who use emulators continue to download them. The games you find online and those on the CD are called ROMs. You can use the Google search engine to find ROMs if you don't mind breaking the law, but I recommend you scan each ROM you download with a virus scanner to make sure your computer is not accidentally infected with a virus. If you don't have a virus scanner, get one. I recommend Grisoft's AVG Anti-virus Free Edition. It's free, as the title suggests, and it tends to get the job done.

You can also find legal Super Nintendo ROMs. Search Google for these as well. They are called Public Domain ROMs, and people like you and me (well, maybe a little smarter) have made them for people to have for free.

When you find the ROMs you want, just put them in the same folder as ZSNES. It'll be easy to open them in ZSNES if you do that. As far as the ROMs on the CD you purchased, you should copy the ones you want to play to the ZSNES folder as well.

Any more questions?

Richard, as long as ZSNES is licenced under the GPL, and as long as you include source code with the program, you can charge people for it. Otherwise, prepare for some ownage.

But yeah, in any case, selling ROMs is illegal.

Also, I recommend Anti-Vir anti-virus software, http://www.free-av.com
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

My bad, I thought that it was illegal to sell unmodified without giving credit to ZSNES devs and including source

It is. Although they're not required to give credit.
