I think this is a little crazy to say the least. Though, this case depends on how bad the kid really is. You would better hope he's learned his lession.. but I don't think next Christmas would be as "nice"....

This made me remember the time a Friend "stole" his mother's car, and she called the Police on us.

In this case, that would make some sense. Unlike gifts, a car is a personal possession of said owner.

Wow, I had to effectively run that link through a proxy to view it, as the link redirects me to the UK site with a 404. In summary, Tom's Hardware sucks.

My Grandparents kept a shaved hickory branch, and my dad used a baseball bat. Does that count?

I think it could have something to do with strict anti child abuse laws in some places. I have a couple relatives that were afraid to dole out spankings as punishment because they were afraid the children would accuse them of 'beating' them. Thats at least one parental excuse I have heard.

Reminds me of an incident that happened about 10 years ago at my parents' business (a small chain of video stores). They used to put security tags inside the game cartridges, so they were damn near impossible to steal unless you wrapped them in foil. The kid scraped most of the tag off of the outside of the cartridge and stuffed it in his pocket, walked through the security gate with his mom and set it off. He emptied his pockets and coughed up the cartridge. His mom blew a gasket. They always have shoplifters arrested, but before my dad could pick up the phone, his mom dragged him out of the store by his ears yelling "BOY! WHEN WE GET HOME I'M GONNA BEAT THE BLACK OFF OF YOU!" My dad filed the police report but didn't press any charges since he didn't actually steal anything and he assumed the mom made good on her threat.

No no. What I'm saying is that the government itself should step in and cane 7 kinds of crap in public out of little idiots who go around vandalizing and stirring other types of crap.

What do they get instead when they're caught? A stern warning and the status of gosh darn cool thug so they can temper themselves for serious crimes later.

I agree. A good ass whoopping is a good start in stead of this slap on the wrist stuff. When I was young if I did something deserving of it, I got anything from sitting in a corner for an hour to a crack on the ass and I turned out fine. It's called dicipline, not abuse. And hold the parents accountable for more of their children's actions. If you can't throw a 12 year old in jail for a month, throw the parents in.

I have to agree there. Whats funny is that I was watching Fox News this morning and they brought it up on their show. Sometimes its funny to hear those arguments.

That kid is obviously an idiot, so in this particular case I think it was the right thing to do.
The problem with the kids that turn out that way is that parrents don't spend enough time with them when they're young. Then they blame schools, violent computer games and society in general... damn parents.

I'm not a fan of the ass whooping, but there is some merit to doing it. At some point though, it makes no sense to keep doing it because the kids have reached a point where such punishment does no good. Also, I'm not a fan of excessiveness if you plan to do that. There's too much PC in society today that would oppose said methods.

The situation with that kid is atypical, and one cannot draw a lesson from it.

Read the police report, that "12 year old" is anything but a well mannered child. Note that the grandmother had more to do with the situation than the mother.

It's just sensationalism again. I hate the fucking news.
