Advice?

Post by lockharte »

Your computer has been placed in "permanent quarantine" because of a problem.

Specifically, NUIT has received a complaint under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) alleging that your computer is acting as an unauthorized distribution point for copyrighted material.

You will need to discuss this situation with NUIT's Information Security Coordinator before your network access is restored. Please call 847-467-6662 between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm, Monday-Friday, and ask to speak to the Information Security Coordinator.

Note: If you have a laptop, please do NOT use it anywhere else on the network as you will only spread the problem and we might have to suspend your netid.
what would be the best course of action from this point?
the guy i called told me to delete everything on my computer. he also yelled at me for being a fucking thief.

Microwave your HD.

But seriously, looks like they still have it under their jurisdiction, as in, you are not going to go to court as long as you comply with their instructions.

So format, or delete any copyrighted MP3s.

The message is saying is that you're doing illegal file sharing. All you have to do is stop doing that, whether it be torrents or whatever.

I assume NUIT is your ISP?

Stop file sharing, and get them to restore your access.

People have too much time and money on their hands so they start organizations to do bullshit. Those organizations sick their dicks where they don't belong. They do lame shit such as download some torrents so they can monitor which IP numbers try to download that torrent from them. Then after compiling a large list of IPs they go to the ISP of those numbers and demand the personal information of the people using those IP numbers. After all that shit, they then take legal action against those who are within the USA. A friend of mine downloaded a single torrent of some shitty game which wasn't new anyway and the next day he got an email from some retarded US organization demanding that he never downloading anything again and threatened to kill him, etc etc. Though they said nothing about legal action, because they can't do anything to him, he's outside of their jurisdiction.

NUIT is a college/university IT dept. It should be obvious what colleges do about filesharing.

Colleges monitor their traffic ALL THE TIME. They really don't want you to waste their bandwidth. They have a right to do this as well. End of story.

For a second, I thought you didn't got it the first time.

But anyway, what were you doing? P2P or bittorrent?

Ah! now I understand he downloaded stuff at college. In my university I have the job to des-installing all the crap that the students download including P2P software and porn. Everything because some jackass that worked here gave the administrator password to his friends. Lucky for me the Administrator account was changed.

And I believe there was a similar discussion about this a long time ago too.

Yes, back in 10th grade, several students (including myself) kept clogging the school's LAN, playing our games, movies, etc in class. (And YES, I did this when I had no work to do either, so dont jump on me for it.)

Anyway, one day we got caught by the principal, and he said we ate like 1.8GB of bandwidth. If this was hard drive space, you'd have enough to install Windows XP SP2.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

Heh! I even remember the time when the Administrator was updating Windows with me and we caught 3 people watching porn. Imagine what happened after. Not only you are monitored in their network but also offline. The companies are exactly the same and even worse.

yes, i attend Northwestern University, and NUIT is my college ISP.

i don't know why i got this, i haven't downloaded stuff for awhile, but i suspect it's because i left Ares on running one night. and i don't think they were packet-sniffing me; they received a complaint from the RIAA, i was told, and so they removed my internet. the guy i called told me to delete all files on my comp that i didn't have a license of ownership for.

i was wondering, does the RIAA have jurisdiction over domains outside music? should i follow his advice?

Well, the getting caught part is not too hard to imagine then.

Probably not, but you shouldn't want to test that. On the other hand, you are safer disabling/uninstalling all P2P/torrents apps while using your school's internet. That way, you won't be caught again. I don't know what exactly you should go about deleting the music files, but I think a "safe bet" of working around that is complying, and then obtaining the music by other means (like, connect with someone at home with AIM and downloading via that method or a safer method of getting it from home, and then transfering the files to your comp). In other words, find ways to obtain what you need by NOT using your school's internet. You will keep yourself out of trouble. Remember, as long as you use you P2P programs, they will automatically share stuff from your system by default and will continue to until you tell the app, or stop using those apps altogether.

The business college? If you got a UPASS we should totally hang out :p I go to UIC. It's a fair bit south in the loop.

Not that I'm condoning piracy, but here's a secret that will greatly reduce your risk of getting sued:

DISABLE UPLOADING.

They mainly go after people that are offering files for download. Disable any searching and/or uploading of files from your computer and you'll probably avoid most legal troubles.

what about the use of peerguardian as well?

and is there *any* bit torrent client (windows and linux version preferred) that lets you disable uploads?

No, because BT doesn't work without uploading. And if you don't upload, clients won't send you anything anyway.
Oh, and if they catch you pirating on BT, you can get nailed (in the US) for downloading and uploading.

PG2 is a waste of resources. Won't protect you in the slightest, just block a bunch of legitimate peers and maybe a few fakes. People seem to forget that these anti-piracy groups use mainly residential connections.

if you are talking about kellog, yes, that is a part of northwestern, but it is for grad students only, (im an undergrad). for reason my university doesn't believe business is a real major for undergrads.

what is a UPASS?

UPASS is a cta transit card, allows for unlimited CTA bus/L Train usage. Not sure what they have for offer at Evanston, but, its REALLY useful if you live in the city.

Waste of resources? It uses almost no memory and doesn't slow my computer down at all. I figure even a little bit of protection is better than none at all.

It uses 20-30MB of memory, some CPU when it updates, and it blocks way too many legitimate peers.
