Treasure Hunter G, for SNES. It's battle system is sort of like a Strategy RPG but the game itself is a pretty regular JRPG.

Definitely not in the mood for anything like that right now. The reason I made this thread was because I wanted to avoid getting into something like that. Don't mean to knock the game or anything.
Hmmm... I suppose you could say that, yes, though the multiple dungeons are interesting.

P3 is VASTLY worse in this regard, alas.

I love that game.. but the Japanese name sounds so much better.. The English translation, albeit hacked to hell, was quite impressive of a conversion to English, where Japanese words and English actually work on the mantra system with comparable effects. The music is also quite impressive for the games era, and the plot (be it the generic type..) isn't as bad as it could be. Now if only they would just hire the guy who translated it, and get him to translate 1098 other good RPGs that didn't make it to the English-speaking world.. "Powerful warrior, smart-ass blackmage, happy healing care for all white mage and dumb-ass thief go on quest to save world from imminent destruction from a group of destructive beings" <-- Now where have I heard this one before....... Oh wait.. was that final fantasy one? yes i think it was..

I liked it, and I give it a second vote. It has both an airship, an undersea vestal, a world map.. TOWNS! and yes! it has items too!

Might i also recommend star ocean as you failed to list it?

Xenogears is another good RPG on the PSX..
Legend of Dragoon (although very long..) is another good RPG on the PSX.. (screw the world map! We have colorful lines!)
Dragon quest (I would list a number, but they're all just glorified fetch-quests anyway..) series.
Chrono cross (psx) is also worth a play at least once.. (I wish I could derail from the lines on this map.. least it has a boat..)
Robotrek (snes) is decent if you don't mind being glued to lines on the world map.

doesn't count, the point is to still convey the same meaning with different words, that is just less specific.

No specifying than an RPG is specifically Japanese is retarded.

JFighting Game
JFPS
JShump
Jsimulation

sound retarded enough yet?

Except that the traditional western and japanese approaches to video RPGs are wildly different.

Which is why JRPG isn't usually applied to action-RPGs. They don't fit the subgenre, despite being japanese RPGs.

regardless of whether you like it or not, I think this very topic is a pretty clear indication that there is a fundamental difference (as a trend) between eastern and western RPGs.

you can call them anything you like but making the differentiation is part of talking about them. To be honest I don't like the abbreviation RPG because it's such a misused term, but it works. I'm sure you can appreciate that.

Like Gil said, I'd be tempted to say that they both shouldn't even be under the same title "RPG" as they are two completely different types of games. Again, hence the differentiation.

And abolishing RPG, or at least tightening it massively, would settle my long-running gripe about it being slapped on action-adventure games!
I heartily second the motion!!!

Whoa, I'm sorry I typed a wrong letter in that acronym! I didn't mean any harm.

Anyway, I found out Wild Arms 5 isn't out here until 2008. Maybe I'll mod my PS2... or get a dexdrive and use that memory card hack. I've wanted to play Xenosaga 1 forever anyway. And I'm not gonna settle for that story summary DVD they apparently released over here (insert joke about how that's not very different from Xenogears disk 2 lulz).

Rudra, Star Ocean and Treasure Hunter G (if I can find a complete translation) are all on my to-play list, among other SNES ones. That's why I'm mostly looking for PS1 and later, because my 16-bit list is pretty full already.

Metalhawk's is complete, he (very professionally) branded it incomplete only because he didn't test it to all hell and back.

Have you played Legend of Legaia? It's a ps1 game, I didn't get too far to see if you had an airship.. Interesting battle system, hard game, at least for me.

I just happened to be playing that now. I haven't completed the game since 1999 but I recall no airship, there is an item you can use to teleport around. It may seem hard to you because it's one of those games where a little grinding is needed. You could beat the game at pretty much any level but if everyone reaches 99 you get some special shit.

I have that exact patch, too! One of the patches I downloaded once and meant to test but never got around to. I've got more stuff than I thought I did.

yes, and of course you are going to use this patch in conjunction with the perfectly legal cart of THG you ordered from japan for an exuberant price. How lucky you are! ;)

sorry, couldn't resist.

No, that game needs to be buried DEEP within the dark alleys of gaming. It´s weapon system should be stripped of and altered beyond recognition and then injected into another game that actually has a storyline.
