Wii - Homebrew Channel

Post by ReRuss »

I recent tried this out using a "Twilight Hack" which is basicly using a modded save for Zelda:TP

It's very simple and works with non-modded Wiis , no backup support in case anyone is wondering

I recently tried out using the "swap trick" on my PS1.

It's basically jamming the lid sensor, then yanking out a real PS1 disk while it's loading and sticking a CD-R in it's place. It works with non-modded PS1s.
But mine can't read my writable disks, so I dunno if it actually worked.

There are also methods of injecting ROMs into "WADs" (or packages containing Virtual Console channels), allowing one to play certain games on the Virtual Console that you normally wouldn't (for example, Chrono Trigger or Earthbound).

Don't ask where to find WADs or ROMs, as they're both illegal.

The Homebrew Channel is nice. Just load some emulators and you'll have a blast.

Don't you have a risk of permanently bricking the Wii?

I think the worst you can do is have to format memory if you mess something up... usually by installing messed up channels...

Homebrew Channel is the only channel I've installed , and I havn't heard anyone getting problems with it...

I've tried injecting roms into VC titles... it just didn't work so well on games I tried... so I just use the emus

Homebrew Channel is very safe to install. Well, it went fine for me.

Better to use a disc Gameshark/Code Breaker/whatever. Also, you gotta be fast, use non-crap discs and no CD-RWs. The PS1 can't read CD-RWs.

Now suppose one wanted to use .WAD files (i.e Chrono Trigger/Secret of Mana) on the VC, would that royally screw up the firmware or what? I'm not asking where to get them due to them being
somewhat shady, but asking if a wii is safe when one uses them...?

i don't get the last post.

it's not possible to inject different roms into VC WADs? because it is.

what's the point when you can just launch an emulator? i don't know.

That's redundant; bricked is permanently unrecoverable.

I was basically saying even though I know little about the wii it would be ridiculous for something in the VC to affect the firmware.

Yes it's possible , the only thing atm is they say it's best to use DKC2 for SNES injection , so you'd have 2 DKC2 channels , but you can label it to say Chrono Trigger , just can't change the logo yet... plus you need this common-key file to actually do it

Or you could just get a SNES emulator and it's MUCH easier, and CT runs perfectly fine with that...

So, is it safe to assume It'll be okay if I do either or, am I correct?

Pretty much , unless Nintendo decides to have a new update... in which case wait on update , check if new workaround is needed

If you do install any "WADS" it's safer to remove them with an uninstaller rather than Wii's channel manager, if you're worried that Nintendo will start banning anyway

I'm not so much worried about banning as I am screwing up the firmware. But, as you said, I won't have any problems installing homebrew emulators/WADs.

I heard the Twilight Princess exploit was patched about a month and a half ago.

It was. Hackers found a workaroud in a few days, however. :)

Also, it's mostly only possible to brick your Wii with WADs if the channel banner was made incorrectly. You shouldn't have this problem with channel is verified to work by many people. Check gbatemp.net, in the Wii Hacking forums. ;)

So, does it tell you how to make the banner(s) correctly?

Only custom WAD I installed was Homebrew Channel , but I have heard that some WADs are unsafe...

There's a homebrew browser you can run with HC , lets you get online to browse homebrew apps and download them without the need for a PC , however if you will need a PC if you plan on getting any roms to go with an emulator lol

It's not hard to install apps tho , just read the FAQ on how to setup the directories for your SD card , and be sure your ELF file is named boot.elf otherwise it wont show in the HC app list...

Not sure how well all the emus work , I just know the SNES emu I use runs perfectly fine

It helped that it was a lazy fix. They special-cased it, and just checked for TP saves with the specific wrong name.

Huh! Snes9x Wii is that good, huh? Maybe I'll use that instead of the .WAD, but, I'll do some more research...

I don't use WAD emus since it installs new channel... I use ELFs (which is what HC uses) , the snes9x I use (theres like a dozen diff snes9x wii emus) and it's at like v3 or somethin , it's kinda newish and updated

If you want , I can link you
