Earthbound problem

Post by Shadow Bunny »

I'm currently running Earthbound on ZSNES v1.51. I was just about to fight the Kraken when my computer BSoD'd. I rebooted the computer and, when I opened up the ROM, my in-game save had been erased. I loaded my savestate, but there's no sound and the game freezes every time I enter a battle, use teleport, or go inside. Here's the nsrt info for the ROM:

Code: Select all

---------------------Internal ROM Info----------------------
       File: Earthbound.smc
       Name: EARTH BOUND Company: Nintendo
     Header: SWC Bank: HiROM
Interleaved: None SRAM: 64 Kb
Type: Normal + Batt ROM: 24 Mb
    Country: USA Video: NTSC
ROM Speed: 120ns (FastROM) Revision: 1.0
Checksum: Good 0x4048 Game Code: MB
---------------------------Hashes---------------------------
      CRC32: DC9BB451
        MD5: A864B2E5C141D2DEC1C4CBED75A42A85
--------------------------Database--------------------------
       Name: Earthbound
    Country: USA Revision: 1.0
Port 1: Gamepad Port 2: Gamepad
Genre 1: RPG Genre 2: Turn Based
Any advice would be much appreciated.

You've experienced what happens under a worse case scenario.

There's not much you can do other than using the savestate.. loading it up and saving in game. Then, reload the game and you should be able to do something with that now (and create a new savestate because the current savestate is not very helpful to you).

It's critical that you save in game OFTEN and creating a savestate AFTER you've done saving, thereby reducing the kinds of issues you may be experiencing.

I'd try making a new hard save, but the game freezes every time I go inside or use teleport, so I can't reach a phone.

I'm sorry, but this is a live and learn type of deal. When stuff happens, you need to create backups and backup plans under the worst case scenario.

Mind you, it has nothing to do with the game itself (although the issues you are experiencing are increased due to the game), but if you create a seperate savestate at save points and save often, you have a better chance of recovering from this type of issue.

If you have skills, you can try finding where in your state the SRAM is stored, and saving it to a separate file.

vSNES -> hex editor ->ZST -> SRAM, save to file

EDIT: Wait, I forgot that SRAM wasn't covered in the info I had available. ;⁔;

Are there any cheats that'd let me get back to where I was quickly, or do I have to start from the beginning?

Yes, you have to start from the beginning. I thought this has been told a few times already.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

I lost my Earthbound save also, earlier in the year. I forgot to back up my sram saves when I upgraded to Intrepid. It was lame, because I was so proud for getting so far without using states at all. Oh well. I guess I'll pick it up again eventually, but I'm still mourning :P

This stuff happens. Life goes on.

Well, it defeats the purpose of starting a new game but you may find a far .sram save of a on zophar.net.

Edit: Crap....I should've said "you can download an .sram save from zophar.net"
