Khronos are basing opengl around the capabilities of the hardware, instead of having the hardware based around the capabilities of opengl, Its kind of all you can do when the hardware is going to be based around Direct3D, as thats where the market is :\. unfortunate as it is.Deathlike2 wrote:That was years ago.h4tred wrote:So, OpenGL is the "hey we don't innovate, we imitate!" It's not dead... just castrated because they are waiting for MS, instead of doing stuff on their own. Its becoming more and more obvious that OGL is dead.
It sounds more like too much arguing over details instead of trying to get it right for the good of OpenGL.Yes and it shows how Khronos is trying thier hardest to bring thier specs in line with D3D. It should have been there from the start. All we are getting is empty promises and nothing but a lame imitation.

ATI Catalyst 9.6 gets 10 new extensions, full OpenGL 3.1 support is almost there (80%), GL geometry shaders and more:

That's some really exciting news for ATI usersInterestingly, it seems AMD is seriously updating the OpenGL part of Catalyst. Catalyst 9.6 starts to support geometry shaders by adding 512 geometry uniforms. In the previous version, this value was 0. And compared to the previous versions, the number of vertex and fragment uniforms has been multiplied by 2: 1024.

OpenGL 3.2 Released with Geometry Shaders Support
(with double-precision float support for GPGPU)
Now it's up to AMD to release their OpenCL drivers.The Khronos Group on Monday nnounced OpenGL 3.2, the third major update in twelve months to the widely adopted 2D and 3D graphics API. This new release continues the rapid evolution of the OpenGL standard to enable graphics developers to access cutting-edge GPU functionality across diverse operating systems and platforms.
Now we have OpenGL 3.2 that fully exposes state-of-the-art GPU capabilities in a form that meets the needs of both new and experienced OpenGL developers,? said Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group and vice president at Nvidia.
OpenGL 3.2 adds features for enhanced performance, increased visual quality, accelerated geometry processing and easier portability of Direct3D applications. The OpenGL ARB (Architecture Review Board) working group at Khronos has defined GLSL 1.5, an updated version of the OpenGL Shading language, and two profiles within the OpenGL 3.2 specification providing developers the choice of using the streamlined Core profile for new application development or the Compatibility profile which provides full backwards compatibility with previous versions of the OpenGL standard for existing and workstation applications.
OpenGL 3.2 has been designed to run on a wide range of recent GPUs and provides a wide range of significant benefits to application developers, including:
Increased performance for vertex arrays and fence sync objects to avoid idling while waiting for resources shared between the CPU and GPU, or multiple CPU threads;
Improved pipeline programmability, including geometry shaders in the OpenGL core;
Boosted cube map visual quality and multisampling rendering flexibility by enabling shaders to directly process texture samples.
In addition, Khronos has defined a set of five new ARB extensions that enable the very latest graphics functionality introduced in the newest GPUs to be accessed through OpenGL ? these extensions will be absorbed into the core of a future version of OpenGL when this functionality is proven and widely adopted.
?Nvidia is committed to the continued rapid evolution and adoption of OpenGL and we are proud to release our OpenGL 3.2 beta drivers on the same day as the specification itself is published. We are listening carefully to developer feedback and will continue to rapidly evolve OpenGL to meet the needs of the industry,? said Barthold Lichtenbelt, chair of the OpenGL ARB working group and OpenGL engineering manager at Nvidia.

Even though NVidia doesn't have ATI's CCC/.NET CP, it suffers from WTF profile CP syndrome.
You would think they would have put more attention to fixing their CP issues.. I'll take a semi-resource hogging but working CCC anyway.

The ATI Stream Software Development Kit (SDK) is a complete development platform to allow you to quickly and easily develop applications accelerated by ATI Stream Technology. This version 2.0 has a new feature: you can now develop applications in OpenCL (Open Computing Language). OpenCL is the first truly open and royalty-free programming standard for general-purpose computations on heterogeneous systems.
This SDK contains the OpenCL.lib + OpenCL headers you need to compile OpenCL programs. Cool!

The OpenCL Beta drivers bring more OpenGL improvements:
* 2 new OpenGL extensions (for a total of 161)
* 44% of OpenGL 3.2 supported
