i only can find contra.nes is there a way to get it to contra.smc?

That only works if you update the headers with NERT

Yes, perhaps changing the file extensions of my text files to ".exe" will turn them into applications of some sort.

you need a backup unit for the super nintendo, then insert your Contra 3 super nintendo cartridge into the unit and back the game up to floppy disk. then use that file in zsnes. getting the Contra 3 rom image any other way is illegal.

I actually know people who know the files by the windows description instead of the extension

ie Audacity Project File, Text File

I think that it would be better if the OP would educate himself/herself on various computer and emulation-related topics before even thinking about touching ZSNES.
