Still, it can easily be cracked. I'd be more concerned if they starting using dongles o.o

I didn't say it COULDN'T be. I'm just trying to figure out WTF franpa is on about this time.

I'm actually fairly sure he's delusional again, especially given Stardock makes a big deal out of their shit not having ANY copy protection.

I can't imagine Stardock says "Okay, send us your SID and we'll send you a custom-compiled version of our software JUST FOR YOU that will never work ever again if you reinstall Windows, change computers, or any other routine commonly-occuring task. Also, if you share the computer, this will only work on ONE of your machine's logins. Choose wisely."

ESPECIALLY since they make a big deal out of using NO copy protection.

I believe franpa means the product activation method of using HWIDs, generated from common things like MAC addresses, etc.

So its still DRM like Steam etc.

And yeah, how Stardock does things is sure as hell PA......

Explain why changing the SID to a specific one is needed to get past the protection then?

With some protections like Armadillo, Themida, EXECryptor and Enigma, forcing to a specific HWID is needed when cracking it. So, franpa is right, just not in the way he intended.

But generally, forcing to a specific ID for the end user is stupid, and pathetic.

I know it is silly to do, as it is usually done to make the product think your computer matches with the activation code. It doesn't bypass/crack the activation process at all and is only worth doing (if at all) after a fresh install of Windows otherwise you face most things no longer working due to no longer owning permission rights to them etc.

This is getting pretty fucking derailed, so I'm going to fix.

I've been playing Wolfenstein 3D on my XBOX 360 lately... and when I beat the shit out of that, I started on Doom on the same machine. God only knows why nobody has released Doom 2 on XBLA, or I would have been knee-deep in that as well. Anyways, when I beat the hell out of Doom I started on Duke Nukem 3D. And I'm still on the first episode, but I think it's about time to kick ass and chew bubble gum.

....and I'm all out of gum.
