Ah, and one last question; what's the option I want, if I want the resolution to be not all gaussian-blur/anti-alias, but have the pixels all be sharp and clean-looking? And yes, I mean 'jaggy'. I've do/done Sprite comics, characters; I like the look.

Use a D resolution.

I would use the NTSC filter if you want accurate emulation, FWIW. many games will have off colors and the perspective will be a bit off as well without it, but if you prefer the ultra sharp look then be my guest.

I han't had time to play in a few months, but I rememberd that, after I got it started working again, then a reboot later, didn't work anymore, same problem.
Also, (I know you guys don't cover this), my NEStopia doesn't even open a window...

duplicated on win7 x64. zsnes will run if sound is disabled; halts on startup if sound is enabled in the config file OR halts immediately if sound is enabled via the gui after starting up with sound disabled. happens on multiple refresh rates., so it doesn't appear to be related to that.

audio is from IDT, latest driver is installed.

latest dx update (aug 09) is present.

there are no consistencies in running apps between my machine and the OPs with the exception of jusched, which has been ruled out as the cause.

op: what sound solution does your machine have? this appears to be a driver-related issue.

edit: verified it's an audio driver-related issue. op likely has the same driver, given that his machine is a dell and they use slightly modified intel motherboards.

current workaround: reboot, launch zsnes, pray. lather, rinse, repeat.

Unknown problem, unknown if unrelated:
Message shows up after bootup: "'MOM.Implementation, Version2.0.3427.27885, Culture=neutral, PublicKetToken=90ba9c70f846762e' or one of it's dependencies.
The system cannot find the file specified"
Asked Dell, told it's video-driver related. Unsure if causing any problems (I don't notice anything, but might not be recognising symptoms: I have no idea what it means). Given link to video drivers for after uninstall. Paranoia: uninstalling them won't deactivate monitor, will it?

Plan A: reboot, retry.

Plan B of action; reinstall both sets of drivers?
Risk assesment: Finals this week; will wait with execution, in case of SNAFU.

easiest way to tell is to disable audio output in zsnesw.cfg. if zsnes starts up normally, it's confirmed.

Turning the 1 to a 0, saving and closing the file, and opening zSNES results in sucessful start, without sound. Going to the menu to reactivate sound, then closing and rebooting zSNES restores full fucntion.

Interestingly, my NEStopia emulator, which was also malfunctioning, also resumed normal function.
Downloaded Rockman 2, and beat Airman first.

Asked Dell, told it's video-driver related. Unsure if causing any problems (I don't notice anything, but might not be recognising symptoms: I have no idea what it means).

MOM is a component of ATI Catalyst, and the error could be from a bad install or uninstall. Who knows what its causing (it could affect sound if HDMI is a feature on the PC) and who knows how it happened, but it may be fixed by a uninstall and clean up of leftovers by Driver Sweeper (Only select what you are cleaning). Then install the latest from either Dell's or AMD/ATI's download pages.

Any other info I can provide that might help?

Experiment: last time, neither NESten nor zSNES would work. Last time, with the sound deactivation on zSNES, it got both to work.
Tried variations of deleting one or the other (.rar backups), both failed to start, in the same way, in either case.
That suggests it's not them, but my computer, doesn't it?

Ugh, so; the things I did the times it got it to work did something.... I don't know what those are, but it was "something else"... ?

disable all non-essential programs and services. see if zsnes runs. if it does, reboot and try again multiple times to make sure it's not intermittent success.

if it works, consistently, reenable programs/services one-by-one and torture test zsnes again til you find the culprit.

if it fails, your best bet is to do a clean install of windows and torture test zsnes after each driver install to find the culprit.
