I'm paranoid about LGA 1366
I bought THIS Combo but when I removed the cap from the board the pins are black and so small that I can't see if they are all ok. Even with a flashlight I can't tell if they are bent or not. The patterns look consisting enough...I hope. Then I held the i7 CPU like it was some kind of explosive and placed it on the socked but a part of it fell in place I closed the lever but the lever was hard... I closed it anyway. Anyway my question is how delicate are the socket pins of a ASUS P6T? The CPU fell in place less than a centimeter because it slip from my fat fingers but...
Yes I know that my grammar sucks!

I need to wait for the Thermal compound Artic Cooling MX-3 to arrive in order to start building the PC... I got it from ebay.... I hope that the pins are ok but the internet make a huge deal about the pins being easy to bend that I don't know if they are overreacting.

They aren't, but you are.
Easy to bend doesn't mean "a stiff breeze will knock them all down like a house of cards." It means "don't jam your finger down on the fucking socket."

From my own experience the socket can survive at least minimal abuse from a slight misplacement of the cpu pcb, plus the pressure on the pins due to the lever is greater than what that pcb falling should be able to do (if it fell flat on them, at least - don't go throwing cores like shurikens into the mobo).
I spent about an hour online reading lga faqs before I found one mentionning how ludicrously noisy putting the lever down the first time is.
Expect loud "pop" sounds as the cpu-side tiny golden spots get punched up by the pins as you slowly crush the lever back in place.
That kind of noise usually meant you fucked up nicely in the old frictionless system, but here it seems normal fare.

...and elbow grease. also, a lint-free cloth would be nice, but it's unnecessary if you're careful.Neo Kaiser wrote:So to remove a thermal compound I only need Alcohol and q-tips.
i usually use a drop or two of good-quality lighter fluid (e.g. ronsonol) to dissolve any goo, allowing it to be wiped off easily. follow that up with rubbing alcohol (91%, preferably) to remove any residue from the lighter fluid.
i kinda miss the days of carefully applying a superthin layer of AS to the exposed die of a 370/462 chip with a razor blade... </derail>
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

there's no risk unless you're clumsy. it's not like when you could crack the die because your finger slipped; you've got an IHS on the chip to protect it from those kind of accidents.Neo Kaiser wrote:I better wait for everlasting ebay then. Too much risk for an amateur like me.
you need to clean them both anyway, before you do the "real" install of the heatsink with the mx-3 - why not throw it on and make sure it posts before going to all the effort?

rubbing in a few dabs of grease into the base of the cooler has always improved heat distribution across the heatsink surface imo.odditude wrote:uh, no.franpa wrote:Well, the TIM is only on the heatsink or processor, not both so uh, it saves him cleaning one of the parts later.
always clean both surfaces immediately prior to heatsink installation. dust and finger grease make for shitty thermal interfaces.

Arctic silver stuff clearly recommends not doing this, though.
Manuals, read them.

Artic silvers manual is for retards with little experience in pc cooling setups.grinvader wrote:Arctic silver stuff clearly recommends not doing this, though.

Shocking you're actually telling Gil about stupids and fails, given you seem to get banned everywhere you go..
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?
